    Nice find SBF-great thread!

I am sure they will get round to amending that verse in the NWT before long.

UC:You know your religion is pretty fucked up when it has to change song lyrics because it conflicts with official doctrine...

    Mark 12:34 (New International Version)

34 When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God."

JWF:I often pondered over the meaning of that phrase.

Here are some more to ponder on

1 Thessalonians 5:23 (New International Version)

23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Hebrews 4:12 (New International Version)

12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

    James 2:26 (New International Version)

26 As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead.

    Luke 1:46-47 (New International Version)

    46 And Mary said:
    "My soul glorifies the Lord
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior

I thought that the songs removed were because they were written by worldly people and apostates. I guess that extends to the words of Jesus as well.

The WT disfellowshipped the real Jesus over a hundred years ago.

    Blessings, Stephen

Trinitarians disfellowshipped the real Jesus 1800 years ago

................and then proceeded to kill, butcher, and quarter any who stood in their way.................

Yep - that was one of things that confused me too. I looked at the WT explanation but never really bought - another unclosed case in the mental filing cabinet.

its freaky, because I was just thinking of this song and that point a few days ago.

Maybe it is giving them too much credit to say they changed this song out of embarrassment. After all an organization that can now say there are "evidently" two overlapping endtime generations is surely not much susceptible to ambarrassment. They probably just changed the lyrics to make it scan better, as seems to be behind most of the changes in the songs.

If the memory of this old fart serves him well. I think it used to be "my beloved" in the Song Book we used in the 1950s.

This is similar to the attempt to adjust the generation teaching in 2008, they went back to the 1927 version, now in the song they have gone back to the 1957 version.

I bet the motive is to hide the words of Jesus, because they plainly differ from WT doctrine, and to put him further in the background.

I also bet good money their god-awful singing has not improved, and even more people get up and go for a Jimmy Riddle than with the old songs.

I figure it's probably a simpler reason than that, why they changed the lyric. Just like with "From House to House", where they don't mention the possibility of a negative response from the householder anymore. The idea of being killed for this religion is something they'd probably like to keep out of the minds of the 'belongings', if possible. Suppress any negative thought.

But clearly, you make a valid point. By JW logic, if you kill the body, you already HAVE destroyed the soul, because the body is the soul. To suggest that Jesus is speaking about destroying 'future life prospects' really is to make a significant leap of logic. I guess the only thing is, how does one explain the 'proof texts' JWs use, Ps. 146:3, 4 or Eccl. 9:5-10? Well, I think one would have to counter with Jesus' illustration of the rich man and Lazarus, which JWs say is symbolic of something else. My problem with that is, why would Jesus Christ, if he believed as JWs do, use an illustration that on its face looks like a blatantly pagan and false doctrine? He offered no detailed explanation of its meaning, none that is recorded in scripture, at least. So I find that one to be another example that's diffiCULT to wriggle out of.

But you know, it's just a thought. Interesting point.

Different parts of the Bible have different viewpoints on death. Some parts resemble the Witness view of 'soul sleep' or annihilation and other parts talk about some sort of life after death. That's my explanation anyway.
