I would ask, what is an apostate?. Then say, Yes, because by definition I am. Chances are, they are to. I'm not offended by it. I've even considered buying jewelry with big letter 'A's and wearing them like a proud Scarlet Letter.
About 9 yrs ago, on one of my rare conversations with my dad, on the phone, He asked me point blank, "Are you an apostate? I felt a sickness go though my body, like a punch in the stomach feeling, and I said, "No". But I would never say that again....not even to/for him.

I would have it easier, because in my language the word used for "apostate" is literally "faith leaver". So I would say: "No, I have never left my faith in God. What makes you think that?"
Then again if scrutinized JW's have one faith that is explicitly theirs: that the GB is God's channel, mediator between Jesus and men, and source of all that is True™. I am not ashamed not to have that sort of faith any more.

Are you an apostate?"
It's actually a funny question considering the JW "religion" finds its roots in apostasy.

"No."
Here's the biblical definition of apostasy.
1 Timothy 4:1-2 (English Standard Version)
Some Will Depart from the Faith
1 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, 2 through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared
Have the GB's consciences been seared as they have devoted themselves to evil doctrines such as abstaining from blood transfusions and shunning family and friends as if they were dead? Have they proved to be insincere liars with the denial of their own words and teachings? This says it all.Galatians 5 (English Standard Version)
Christ Has Set Us Free
1 For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.2 Look: I, Paul, say to you that if you accept circumcision, Christ will be of no advantage to you. 3 I testify again to every man who accepts circumcision that he is obligated to keep the whole law. 4 You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace.
Is the JW seeking to be justified by the law of the WT or are they free in Christ?
Have JWs submitted themselves to be slaves of the WT or are the set free in Christ?
Is Christ of "no advantage to" JWs because they are not in Christ?
Charles Taze Russell fell from grace of Christ as swapped the message for one of works. The subsequent WT leadership have continued the distancing themselves from Him and piled on the "works" and the law.
Blessings,
Stephen
