It is mind-boggling how the average Jehovah's Witness won't even blink when confronted by the fact that the ENTIRE CONCEPT of turning the "faithful and Discreet Slave" into the central dogma of Jehovah's Witness theology COMES FROM MARIA RUSSELL!!

Without the FDS doctrine there would be no GOVERNING BODY ruling the Watchtower!!

    Great stuff, everyone... thank you.

Didn't the WTS. announce in 1919 that they were the FDS , long after Maria was out of the picture ?

I think what Terry meant may have been that it was Maria who first came up with the idea that a person (Russell) or (later) a group of people (GB) could be called the "faithful and discrete slave" organizationally.

Rutherford wanted to remove Russell from this "slave" position for his own power purposes.

Barbara has already (re)published one of Maria's "lost" books, which really gives a glimpse into her theology:

It's an important piece of the history of Jehovah's Witnesses.

I remember an active JW telling me: I don't consider anything that happened in the Organization before 1918 as being worth my time!

    Interesting self-amnesia.

Does that include that pesky son of God's invisible return?

    Hahahahahah..he meant "organizational" happenings.

It was just too embarassing when my friend had to confront the Pyramid garbage.

What he didn't realize is that the Pyramid teaching continued for awhile under Rutherford. I think (don't remember) it was around 1925 or so that Pyramidology suddenly became officially "Satanic" in the Watchtower!

    Doh!

Now that I think about it, Jesus return was believed to have been in 1874 well into the 30s, I think.

And Rutherford was all about the return of the faithful men of old, who were set to return in 1925.

Those are a couple of post 1918 organizational happenings (read: changes) that he might find troubling...

Pretty soon all dubs will have to say, "I don't consider anything that happened in the Organization before 1995 as being worth my time!"

My former best friend (active JW) pointedly told me, "If the Society EVER sets a date again----I'm gone!"

Betcha a million bucks he'd wait until AFTER that date before he was gone.......and maybe....not even then.
