How did you start smoking or chewing and get addicted? I'm curious after talking about it on the other thread. I think it's fair to find out personal stories before declaring them selfish for smoking. The non-smoking side says that smokers are selfish bastards about it. What does the smoking side say?

I dip (this is not the same as chew.) I am switching to snus however, which are almost harmless.

Snus (pronounced like snooze?). Are they the kind that produce smokeless smoke? I saw something about that kind on the 'net. Isn't it the tar that is dangerous? Does snuff have tar? I wonder what's in it to cause mouth cancer.

I started smoking when I was about 11 years old. No idea why. I did quit, get baptised, but started again when I was about 18.

I've never smoked. Never tried it. I grew up around people who smoked incessantly.
I had asthma as a kid and would cough alot.
In the car I'd ask my parents to open a window because of the smoke.
My parents would tell me "It's all in your mind. You'll get use to it."
That is when I formed my deep respect for smoker's rights.
My Mom had cancer three times. The last time was lung cancer. She died a long, slow and painful death swelling up like
a water balloon. She had to have her lungs drained several times a day. The chemo was like medeival torture.
When I was younger I'd ask her why she continued to smoke even though she'd already been warned about cancer returning.
She'd shrug and say, "I could step off a curb and get hit by a bus too, but, that's not going to keep me from leaving the house."
That's when I developed my admiration for the profound sense of reality smoker's have.
At the end, I think that bus would have been far more merciful a death.

Oh Terry, that's awful about your mom. I started this thread because I really want to know why people continue doing something that is so harmful. Addiction is a hard thing to kick, but after my friend was recently diagnosed with lung cancer, he quit suddenly and successfully. I want to say that their addiction is all in the mind and it's mind over matter. But I'm not sure that's fair. The shock of getting lung cancer and other cancers associated with smoking and snuff I would think would be powerful enough to get them to drop the habit that second. If I read a warning that says this will likely kill you later, I am not apt to try it. I wonder why others do try it and continue it. It's a mystery (another life long mystery of mine!).

Husband dips on the sly every 4 months (but gets busted every frakkin time by me--- which reminds me to check his truck when he gets home!).........promised to stop after we got married. 15 years ago.
Causes HUGE arguments, might ultimately be the reason I file for divorce after kiddos finish college.....(Yea I am dead friggin serious)
So in my household it is chalked up to selfishness entitlement---

I believe that when you get married, you and your mate are to give the very best of each other. That means not ruining yourself.

I agree 100%!
Unfortunately many people stay emotionally the age they married / started relationship ....... so emotionally my hubby and I are 19/24yrs in our interaction with each other.......
Looking through the eyes of a recently 36 yrs old woman..... I pout a lot more than I should (but I am cute when I do it and it fosters make-up sex).
If I was single now..... I would be looking at men at 7-10 years older than me.

I lost both my parents to smoking related cancer and heart desease, my older brother as well, and my younger sister has cancer from smoking. You would hope people would learn.
Hey my father was so addicted, if he had to choose between food for the family and cigarettes, he would choose cigarettes, which he did on several occassions.
My daughter when 6 asked my boss why he smoked? He made some excuses, and then she said she never new her grandmother because she died from smoking. "Don't you want to quit?"
He rebuked me for her saying this stuff. I told him, she's only doing this because she likes you and wants to see you live a long life.
