Ynot - Hubby dips on occassion?

I did a little work one time with the husband of my wifes Bible study. He was 'dipping' on the job and then had an epiphany, 'I could tell my wife and she could tell his wife'. "Please don't tell her I'm doing this?!" He promised her he had quit a long time ago.

I asked him why he didn't quit. It had nothing to do with addiction as he told me. It was a guy thing, and all the guys did it. Plus, the peer pressure, "Don't let your wife tell you what to do"

So my thinking, he was more concerned what his buddies thought than his wife, who was more concerned about his health and example for the kids.

Wow, Dissed, you have a smart and caring daughter. That's so sad to lose your whole family to this habit. I heard that it's harder to quit than heroin.

That example you cited sounds like the guy was immature and selfish. He sounds like he's stuck in the teenage stage of growth.

Tobacco is very addicting , for myself I started in my late teens and continued on into my late twenties.

Over a period of time I realized just how addicted to it I had become.

I noticed when moving out of an apartment, just how nicotined the whole place had gotten,

walls and ceilings had gone brown, pictures, furniture, everything.

The constant coughing in the mornings, brown teeth and fingers, what a mess.

The final decision for me came when I was doing some work for a general contractor in a hospital in the cancer division of the hospital.

There were actual samples of people's lungs who had smoked for many years, right up against ones that had never smoked

and the difference was night and day.

Walking past by the patients with breathing apparatuses strapped to their faces had a vital impact

on me because I could see that might be me one day.

Smoking is a dirty, health hazard and expensive habit thats definitely not worth being involved with......trust me

In most modern social circles its looked down upon on with good reason

I'd sure like to explore these "modern social circles." They sound intelligent and healthy.

    I enjoy Cigars..I don`t smoke them all the time..Sometimes 2-4 a week..

I`ll go weeks or months without smoking them..

I`ve gone years without smoking a cigar..I don`t find them addictive..

I think any addiction causes a person to become selfish..they have to feed their addiction at any cost!
    I really believe that.

I don't think it means they love anyone less, it is just they can't help it.
They need a personal reason to quit any addiction be it another person/loved one, Ill health, moral reasons, or hitting rock bottom.
I have pity for anyone with an addiction of any kind.
I would try to encourage that person but they have to want to change.

Sadly many addiction can't be cured. Only controlled. I would stand by that person until it started to affect my life in a negative way.

Thankfully I realized how bad/deadly cigarettes can be when I saw a few friends and relatives die from emphesema..uncurable to the best of my knowledge. I quit. Now my house and I smell so good it is a pleasure to walk into my place.

edited to add that I started a few times , smoked for a few years and would quit for several years then start again. Each time I started up I was in a social setting where others smoked and I had a drink or two.. I would love to have a cigarette but I will never smoke one again..the price is too high.

I hate cigarettes. Always have, always will.

However, ever since I could remember, I liked the smell of a pipe. So, last fall I visited a tobacconist in a mall and bought a corncob pipe and a couple ounces of pipe tobacco. I rather liked the experience, so I went back and bought an Italian made briar.

You're not supposed to inhale like a cigarette. You take the smoke into your mouth and blow it back out without actually breathing it into your lungs. It is all about the flavor and (sometimes) aroma. Not all pipe tobaccos are aromatics. I tried an English blend that really smelled awful, almost as bad as a cigarette. It had a high nicotine content, too, which made me feel rather nauseated. I couldn't finish that tin. Since pipe smoke isn't [supposed to be] inhaled, what nicotine it contains gets absorbed in the mouth, which is much slower than through the lungs. The low level nicotine hit goes well with a mild alcoholic buzz after a long day at work. Of course, like nearly everything, moderation is the key to optimum enjoyment. I hate getting drunk, and I can't stand a strong nicotine hit.

For what it is worth, I didn't get addicted to tobacco. When I ran out of pipe tobacco, I didn't buy anymore. I cleaned my pipe well and put it in a box. Every now and then I take it out and smell the pleasant lingering aroma. I guess I will use it again in the future, but I'm not too interested in smoking tobacco at this time.
