ExJWs & "Adult" Subjects On The Forum

I think we have a tendency to get ourselves involved in subjects that might be "R" or worse rated BECAUSE we COULDN'T as a Jehovah's Witness.

Any talk or discussion of something considered "wrong" would get you into trouble.

Many of us who were brought up in the religion never had any real "normal fun" growing up. We couldn't associate with "worldly" people and even JWs were considered "bad association" if they didn't fit the congregation's ideals. We couldn't tell an off colored joke. We couldn't talk about politics, sports (too much). We couldn't get involved in any extra-curricular activities in school. We couldn't date. We couldn't curse. We couldn't smoke, take drugs or listen to many types of music.

A lot of us are like big kids now. And we often have fun on this board and we're silly. We don't HAVE to be so serious any longer. Of course, that doesn't mean that we're not bound by sensible rules and good judgment. There has to be a checks and balance system or else chaos would result and this place would no longer be welcoming.

Unfortunately, we may cross that line at times in our fun and not realize the problems that could result. We all have different personalities and senses of humor. Some are more serious and "hardline" while others are more liberal and not easily offended at all. Most of us are somewhere in the middle.

I learned a long time ago: not everyone is going to like you. Not everyone's going to love you. And that's OK! On this forum, the same matter of fact applies. Some people warm up to certain ones here while others look at that same person with irritation.

We're pretty much all adults here. We've shared our lives with many on this board. We've told one another of our happinesses and our devastations. This board has been there for many over the years.

Hopefully, we can appreciate and celebrate our differences! And there's no reason we can't have a little adolescent fun at times too.

Didn't you start a thread that got deleted?

I did. it's not the first.

Many of us are enjoying this forum to seriously help JWs and those wanting or thinking about leaving. There are other parts of our personalities that can show up here too.

Minimus, that so beautifully summarizes things!

I enjoyed the thread on breasts yesterday because I like a little levity every once in a while.

The restricted, repressed environment of my childhood combined with a natural reticence makes people think I'm aloof.

I'm not; I just have a hard time revealing how I really feel.

    Thanks for expressing those thoughts.

    THANKS SNOWBIRD!!!!

I appreciate that. We NEED levity at times that doesn't cross the line. You and I joke quite often and we get each other's humor. You saw how one person thought I was being rude toward you and you helped the person to understand WE were just funnin' with each other.

Yeah, my workmate was looking over my shoulder and laughing along with me.

She thinks this board is hilarious.

We can't view videos at work, so I didn't know anything offensive was being posted.

    Oh, well ...

For some folks Betty White is too racy.

Well, just for what it is worth - there was a thread where Leolai posted a really old picture of some Australian missionaries and their old car. I volunteered to try to identify the car to help date the picture. (one of the people was supposedly the GF of Russell)

That whole thread got deleted because somebody apparantly got upset over copyright issues on the clip and paste.

It has happened in the past for political issues as well.

I don't take the thread deletion thing too seriously here - it is just part of this board from time to time.

I reverted back to my original sense of humor after leaving Witnessville. I was raised in the military, and didn't become assimilated by the Borg until the age of about 12-13.

Plenty of time to learn to swear, literally, like a sailor. I also wasn't raised religiously, before becoming Witnesses, my parents were definitely unreligious agnostics who never went to church unless someone was being married or buried in one.

I try to watch my mouth now, because I dislike offending people unnecessarily, regardless of reason, but I don't have any qualms about swearing, cursing or telling dirty jokes.

I don't do it here so much because of the rules, but honestly....I love to use foul language in certain situations. I go to a lot of karaoke and comedy clubs in RL and online and there's a lot of raunchy humor there, and I feel right at home. I can be classy if I want to be too, but rowdy raunchy humor is fine with me.
