I tape all my shows and fast forward through the commercials. Also in the US there is a station known as PBS. I have started watching my shows on computer, but not all are commercial free.

if you have a pc running vista or 7 or xp media center you can watch/record tv through that, there is a free program that scans all your recorded tv shows and automatically strips the adds out when you watch it back.

Not sure if you've heard of OASIS HD, TREASURE HD, EQUATOR HD and RUSH HD - if you have HD, these are 4 great channels with very few commercials. They run movies as well with zero commercials, full and uncut. Not sure if you can subscribe from where you are, but I highly recommend them. Very interesting programming.
Edited to add - when you subscribe you get all four channels. I forget how much it is a month, whatever it is, it's worth it!

I'm thinking of cancelling my cable TV and internet. I rarely watch TV. I have no interest in most of the programming they offer. Most of the time I just watch DVDs. I have cable TV in my office at work if I really need to see something. Since my cable company is throttling my internet upload speed to about 60 kbps instead of the 512 kbps I'm paying for I need to a new ISP either way.
