Can someone please explain the "borg" joke? Are we talking cyborg here or what?

The Borg is a reference to the Star Trek 'Borg', a pseudo-race of 'collective' cybernetic organisms that assimilate (ie take over) humanoid beings and transform them into 'the Borg'. Their primary motto is:
"Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated."
As a Borg, you are part of a 'collective' with a 'hive mind'. All individuality is eliminated for the betterment of the whole.
It totally describes what the Watchtower does to its people.
