Would you still believe if there were no reward in the afterlife

My attitude is that I will serve Him because I love Him.

What He chooses to do in return is entirely His business and none of my concern.

If only we could find a God who is that grown up.

Did first century Christians become Christians for the reward?

    Hebrews 11:6
And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.

Do people of other Christian religions do it so they get to heaven and avoid hell?

Is it a bad thing to recognise the reward and blessings of our actions from God?

What does a "reward" have to do with the existence of God? He doesn't owe me anything.

I'm dismayed by some of the claptrap on this thread.

I don't think its a bad thing to recognize the rewards and blessings. Faith allows us to have certainty in that reward, though we may not fully know what that is exactly, until then.

But the question is about the character of people, not the promises of God. Are you a believer; are you a 'good' person, only because of the reward?

I think most of the answers have reflected that people would follow Jesus even without the reward - out of love, and out of faith that He knew what he was talking about. (Not to mention that he showed us, by example, that death was not to be feared)

I am not necessarily saying there is an absolute connection, but virtually all belief systems have a reward for the person at the end of their days on earth. I know there are exceptions, but so far the vast majority of people I have spoken to over the years have admitted that there is a lot in their belief system that they would not put up with if there were no afterlife.

Do you actually belive that JW's would put up with the Society's restrictions if there were no carrot of a paradise earth at the end of the line? I don't think so.

You're right Donny they wouldn't. Most religious people talk fondly about the rewards they'll receive for doing what they're "supposed" to do. i.e. entering the pearly gates, new world, etc.

I don't think much about the afterlife, about rewards or blessings, it's not my way.

I think we need to fix what God has given to Us, namely our home and our lives and I think it is far easier to do that with God than with out God.

I know some will say that it is impossible to fix it without God at all and they are right, but I also think that God know us so well that even when God is "not a part of it" (or so we think) God IS a part of it.

I think about the times I feel blessed and I realizes that I am NOT blessed by God for those things, I am blessed by God for being able to SEE how blessed I am to have those things, even in the darkest of times.

I don't really deal with "rewards", "ransoms", "afterlifes" and all that, I have faith in Jesus and love Jesus and trust Him.
