I am thinking of getting one but not sure which.
Anyone have a Kindle or similar e-book reader?

i have the kindle 2 and i LOVE it!!! i researched them at http://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_Reader_Matrix
the kindle seemed like the best deal. it has a TON of free books (can't rememeber exactly how many), you can do facebook and email, play sudoku, hilight lines and make notes in books, text to speech, built in dictionary ( -just hilight a word in other ones you have to exit your book and look it up in a seperate book), you can change the font size.... i could go on... lol.
as a "reader" i once swore to never use an e-reader, but i TOTALLY changed my mind!! how awesome to be able to carry all your books at once!!

Screw that, just get an Apple iPad. It's a COLOUR book reader with the abilities of internet, WI-FI, GPS, email, internet, and anything else you can imagine.
I am picking one up at the end of the month.

Call me old fashioned but when I read a book, I like the feel of it in my hands, the smell of the paper, the weight of something substantial, even if it's a Harry Potter book. I haven't had the urge to try a Kindle or something similar.
OTOH, if I traveled a lot or need to carry lots of printed material to different places/clients, etc., then I'd probably be all about having something like the ipad.
Of course, I was slow to join the cell phone ranks and then later didn't see the need for an iphone...until I had one. Now I can't live without it...

I've been doing similar research.
My take is the Apple is far superior than the Kindle, but is it worth the extra $200 for better functionality?
Also, I travel alot, and take paper backs with me. Leaving one on your chair, while you swim, I don't worry about someone taking it (has happened only once, and was out $10) But with a Kindle? Yes, I would worry that it could disappear.
Plus, you can loan a book to a friend (which publishers hate) but you can't loan a book stored in a Kindle (which publishers love)
My conclusion: These things should be free or heavily subsidized, and probably will in time, like any other sub-pay products.

I have a Kindle and absolutely love it! Being able to download books wirelessly while on the go is fantastic. With that being said, I think the iPad is very intriguing. I will probably get one at some point...especially if they make Kindle format books compatible with the iPad.

Somebody stole your BOOK? People steal books where you live? Well-read thieves...That would never happen in my neighborhood. Given that primarily, a Kindle is useful for that purpose, I'm not inclined to worry about mine, but I'm not stupid about it either.
But the Kindle is my favorite toy. I love it. If you read a whole lot, it's worth it. And less likely to get you knocked in the head than an iPad, I'd say. But what do I know?
