Correct me if I'm wrong; but weren't we able to buy another translation of the Bible from the literature counter at one time? Was it the Living English Bible?

I have a BYINGTON translation that I got from KH many years ago. The WTS bought the manuscript which had not been previously published and they published it completely unaltered. They also used to sell the Emphatic Diaglott.

I wouldn't be surprised if something LIKE this happened, or something with SOME SIMILARITIES to this. A MUCH more likely tale:

A brother of the conscious class decides he's had it with playing the Borg game and devises a way to quit with somewhat of a flourish. Decides to use the NIV exclusively both in service and at the meetings. He gives a few comments during the Highlights based on readings from the NIV. Afterwards another elder "has a little talk with him" about how he feels using a non NWT Bible at the KH is inappropriate.

This, in turn, causes the conscious brother to dig in his heels and use the NIV all the more. At his next assigned public talk, just a couple weeks later, he uses the NIV exclusively throughout, causing gasps and fits and discomfort among the true believers in the Hall, with perhaps one or two of the other conscious brothers smiling inwardly.

After the talk, the brother who dislikes him gets a cohort to "have another little talk" with him out back. They self-righteously tell him how inappropriate it is to give an entire public talk at a K.H. without using the NWT AT ALL. He tells them to stick it, and walks out of the KH, never to return (which was his plan all along anyway).

Rumors spread and the one that grows the best legs ends up being the one posted in the orignal post of this thread.

Seems a bit more likely, eh?

I find this incredibly difficult to believe. The Society itself uses the New International Version (when it suits them) and in fact, on their CD ROM, you can see that it's been used over 200 times throughout their literature.

    Three possiblilities occur to me:

    1. It never happened at all.
    2. An elder was privately counseled to use the NWT -
    3. The speaker really was an 'apostate' using his final talk to exit himself - that has happened - some may recall that "LittleToe" who posted here for a long time did so. If that sort of talk was given, and was long enough to allow the elders to try and stop it - this story might have happened in some fashion.

I can't really imagine two elders bodily handling the other elder in any case. Probably xjw urban legend.

I like the version Mad Sweeney types out. Since joining the board- Mad Sweeney is a voice of reason who travels somwhere down the middle road. A voice of reason. The scenario he pointed out may been somewhat more accurate. I'm sure the story was embellished coming down 3rd party.

Like the rest of you - I too purchased the Bible in Living English while a JW as I had OTHER translations published by the WT society. And saw the WT society use these translations in quotes.

But that being said ; like many here also- I have seen certain bodies of elders, even one or two individual elders go off their nut and be dominating over other elders that piss them off by expressing their individuality as this elder allegedly did. Some bodies of elders DO NOT FOLLOW the WT society's lead in running their congregations. In fact- My 84 year old JW elder dad ( elder for 55 years admitted just that to me last September ) that he had seen " Many elders over the years not do their duties as instructed by the WT society. "

So the possibility that this indeed happened could very well be true - but in a different way as Sweeney stated is entirely plausible

I would like to also mention that the WTS uses translations other than ones they publish. There were 9 quotes from the NIV in the 2009 WTs alone. I would think that if he had been using another translation consistently like that, that that point would have made the story, even 3rd hand. As to dragging a brother off the stage, I would think that would cause more trouble in the congregation that his using another bible translation consistently. If he had been doing that, a better way to deal with it is not to give him any more talks on the platform and not to call on him when he raises his hand. This story smells.

The version I heard actually said it was two Smurfs who sandwiched the Elder and dragged himout back.

May you please add more to your version? When, where and how did this take place?

I don't buy it, I quoted plenty of non-JW translation. Givemeabreak, even the Society quotes non-JW translation.

If it is true, there was more involved. I do know that I got cross looks from using the old green Bible the jws used. It somehow indicated I was not keeping up with current "light" .
