Not only does the light get brighter and brighter... so does the WT-approved Bible!

It was a while ago but decades after the NWT was published. My aunt and uncle had a Witness book that compiled various translations, a sort of parallel translations. I was certain it was bs so I examined it more closely. There were some upscale translations in it. The Society gained some points in my view. Now I am wondering how they got the copyright clearances.

The NWT is seriously flawed. No one on the committee had expertise to undertake such a project. When you start with doctrine and notice how every exisitng translation is opposed to your doctrine, you don't approach your translation with neutral eyes. The translatio nis going to flatter your doctrine. Hebrew and Koine Greek cannot be picked up the way one learns French, Italian or German. Connotations are crucial.

I gave my 1st public talk at the age of 19 and I used a living translation! ALL of my talks had quote's from the living bible (my non-NWT choice.)

I did this thru-out my...career (for lack of a better word) and was never once counselled. I call Brittney Spears...BS!

I wouldn't be surprised if something LIKE this happened, or something with SOME SIMILARITIES to this. A MUCH more likely tale:

A brother of the conscious class decides he's had it with playing the Borg game and devises a way to quit with somewhat of a flourish. Decides to use the NIV exclusively both in service and at the meetings. He gives a few comments during the Highlights based on readings from the NIV. Afterwards another elder "has a little talk with him" about how he feels using a non NWT Bible at the KH is inappropriate.

This, in turn, causes the conscious brother to dig in his heels and use the NIV all the more. At his next assigned public talk, just a couple weeks later, he uses the NIV exclusively throughout, causing gasps and fits and discomfort among the true believers in the Hall, with perhaps one or two of the other conscious brothers smiling inwardly.

After the talk, the brother who dislikes him gets a cohort to "have another little talk" with him out back. They self-righteously tell him how inappropriate it is to give an entire public talk at a K.H. without using the NWT AT ALL. He tells them to stick it, and walks out of the KH, never to return (which was his plan all along anyway).

Rumors spread and the one that grows the best legs ends up being the one posted in the orignal post of this thread.

Seems a bit more likely, eh?

I think, one of the above scenario might be a possibility. You never know. 3rd hand information of course ,is already prone to alteration to a considerable extend. Iam glad every has shown his or her scepticism as to the credibility of this story.

Usage of the ASV By Jehovah's Witnesses

The ASV has been used for many years by the Jehovah's Witnesses. The reasons for their choosing of the ASV were twofold: One reason for adoption of the ASV was due to its usage of "Jehovah" as the Divine Name, which was congruent with their doctrine, and they derived their name from Isaiah 43.10, 12, both of which contain the phrase, "Ye are my witnesses, saith Jehovah." Also, there was a perception that the ASV had improved the translation of some verses in the King James Version, and in other places it reduced the verses that they found to be erroneously translated in the KJV to mere footnotes, removed from the main text altogether. This is the way gospel stories were circulated! You only have to remove the eyewitnesses from the story to have it take on dramatic proportions!

Actual quotes from a hearsay reporter are always very precise.

I think you mean "If the account is corroborated..." To collaborate and to corrobrate are two different things, but if you utter them out loud enough times in succesion, your tongue may get tied - if not your powers of reasoning.

Look, Scott77, there is such a wealth of available established, provable information that calls into question JW doctrine and practice, why bother relating a suspect 3rd-hand account complete with suspicious looking direct quotation marks. It honestly smacks of desperation.

I'm always interested in the ways in which people beef up their urban legends with direct quotations. And yes, JWs do it just like lots of other people do.

Did someone audio-tape a conversation so that they can use quotation marks or is it a lazy device to add creedence to a tall story? I'm with most other posters: A tall, dramatic story.
