what kind of music does an atheist have at their funeral

Yesterday was the day my family went out to the cemetary in my dad's home town to clean up the headstone and leave flowers and such. Now this town is small and rural. Afterwards we went back to the community center for the annual potluck. My husband my daughter and myself were the youngest ones there (and hubby and I are middle aged). So after we ate they had entertainment!!!! 4 men singing gospel music. OMG my hubby and daughter went out to the car after two songs in order to keep their sanity. I made it thru 4 songs before I left.

When I went out to the car I told my daughter that at my funeral I don't want any religious music played what so ever. If she does play gospel or hymns I will come back and haunt her. She laughed and said she wouldn't do that to me.

So It got me wondering what music is played at a non religious persons funeral? I like Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Pink...but they don't seem appropriate.

    I've wondered too.

I love "Ashoken Farewell" you may know it. (You can catch good and very bad recordings on Youtube.)

But, yeh, I sure don't want a string of somebody's "old favorites"sung over me.

But then again--this is very schlocky-- I do love the song AmazingGrace. I can't lie.I believe that song transcends religion in some ways.

Good question, loosie. Kind of reminds me to write my will too.

I think they should play whatever you liked. A side note here: I told my daughters not to bury me in a dress. I hate dresses.

I've selected a few tracks for when I pop my cloggs but am still working on it, I think I've got time to finalise the list yet. Some tunes are there to be poignant and others to be absurd, all are favourite tunes, but from a narrow selection of my tastes. Hopefully any wake will be a little more diverse. I've lost my old playlist which was more complete than this. I think most people will be none the wiser as they're all pretty obscure tunes...sorry.

Julie Murphy and Dylan Fowler - Y Bachan Main (favourite song with simple arrangement)

Yann Tiersen - Le Valse Des Monstres (theme from Amelie just because I like it)

Pink Floyd - Goodbye Cruel World (for a short interlude)

Ewan MacColl - It's Goodbye Now... (pre funeral)

Scott Walker - Funeral Tango (pre eulogy nonsense)

Scott Walker - My Death (post eulogy nonsense)

June Tabor - Lay This Body Down (for the lowering - very poignant)

Syd Dale - Stanley Steamer 1 and 2 (for the carrying the coffin parts or cortege played bloody loud to give passers by a laugh)

Mahalia Jackson - Walk In Jerusalem (not because I'm religious, but to get them dancing in the aisles)

Yes, Ashoken Farewell would do well at mine. Good taste. I'm a bit of a folky too.

Maybe Didgeridoo music would be OK.

I went to a non-JW funeral once and they played Louis Armstrong - It's a wonderful world. Seemed OK to me even though I'm not a fan his.
