A memorial and a bag of ashes is cheap and very beautiful.

When my friend Nancy died every thing was hard for people ,including her husband, to get things together for a gathering very soon after her death. So a date for a year later gave everyone a chance to plan to get there. We had a chance to think of her. We made a potluck and those of us who had never met each other before from different times and places introduced ourselves and told Nancy stories--She was a real character. Then her husband John put her ashes over the meditation garden she had made with rocks and planted on the hillside by their home in the woods.

Only thing we needed was some good music!

Whatever kind of music they liked.

Same as I would want, and I'm a believer. But I wouldn't care about it for my benefit. I'm dead, and I only care about what happens at my funeral/memorial for the benefit of my loved ones. So they can celebrate having known me (hopefully), and gain some closure. Only for that reason would I care about funeral or memorial details reflecting on me - in the cheapest way possible that this could happen, of course. I don't care to have a funeral home or director profiting from my death and stealing money my family needs.

I guess, it's illegal to have them bury me in my backyard. "Ashes to ashes. . .dust to dust", pour some dirt on a trunk, and that's it.

My deceased FIL wasn't "churchy" although he wasn't an atheist. At his funeral in January, we played Josh Groban's version of "You Raise Me Up"which is just inspiring music without overtly religious overtones.

I think an atheist could relate to it...it's not about going to heaven, it's about finding what we need in life among friends and family.

or "Life is a Lemon and I want My Money Back" Meat Loaf

In reality, funerals are for the comfort of the living, not the convenience of the dead - they won't know anything about it..

My dub family can sing what they like as my coffin slips behind the curtain to be engulfed in flames ..it is their day out , I will have - Popped my clogs, Shuffled off this mortal coil ...however you want to say it
