1. Cotton-pickin' lasted from late August to early November - children were excused from school for this.
2. Babies were born with the help of a midwife or "granny." My paternal grandma was one such lady.
3. School was one or two rooms.
4. You learned to read from grocery packages - I learned from a Maxwell House coffee can.
5. There were no locks for doors or windows.
6. You raised your food, or bought some off the rolling store which ran every other Wednesday.
7. Homecoming at church during the summer was the biggest social event.
8. You didn't court until you were ready to get married.
9. You weren't taught anything about sex. Until I was 10, I thought babies were delivered orally.
10. We were our brother's keeper, sometimes literally.

Marvin, it was a very funny movie. Navin R. Johnson (Steve Martin) is always depressed when his (black) family sings the blues. He has no rhythm. And he's wondering when he will finally be like his family in color). Check it out on the internet.

Did you think #9 was called "oral sex"?

No, I mean I thought the "granny" reached down the pregnant mother's throat and retrieved the baby.
I really did.
