In the Asch conformity experiment, one test subject would be put in a classroom with various numbers of confederates who would all give the wrong answer to judgement based questions
When the confederates were not unanimous, even if only 1 of them voiced a different opinion, the test subjects were much more likely to resist the urge to conform than when the confederates all agreed.
That finding suggests the power that even a small dissenting minority can have and why those voices cannot be tolerated in an authoritarian group.
