Many people go to tanning beds, especially in colder climates, simply because it makes them feel good. SAD is a real problem for some people and when the days are short and sunlight scarce, people will sit in a booth for ten minutes and come out feeling much better.

Tanning doesn't have any more to do with whites wanting to be black than blacks using hair straightener because they want to be white.

Isn't if ridiculous that everything from a hair product to a tanning booth must have racial undertones to it. sammieswife

Would raising the tax on sunblock products also constitute racism?

No. Sunblock is a vital healthcare (cancer prevention) product for many of us, regardless of ethnic heritage.

Along with birth control and other preventative measures, it shouldn't be taxed at all.

I've read there's special lamps for that that are somewhat safer than being in a tanning booth.

There are special lamps, I worked in an office where some people had them. I knew others who still felt just as good if they laid in a tanning bed for ten minutes. You have to realize that many people don't really enjoy the cold and when they live through months of little daylight or sunshine, the warmth of the bed and the brilliant mimic of the sun, really does perk them up. You don't have to lay in a tanning bed and fry either...we should also remember that doctors are now recognizing that we have reduced our natural vitamin D intake so much that it is affecting us in many negative ways. Vitamin D is absorbed by the skin during direct exposure to sunlight - now millions suffer from a deficiency from staying out of the sun or using tons of sunscreen.

About 20 minutes a day of sunshine without sunscreen, not a peak times, is all you need to absorb...we no longer get that and instead rely on tablets to fill it...I don't advocate tanning beds or baking in the sun either, but I do recognize that people can use both to make them feel better and I don't believe it has anything to do with race. sammieswife

Who you telling Sammie? I lived in Indiana for 7 years. Granted it's not the coldest climate in the winter but compared to California it may as well have been Alaska. Staying in the house most times and getting winter itch was a bitch. Then afterwhile I noticed I would get a little low especially after the holidays were over and winter seemed to drag. Spring coming along with the light change and everything turning green was a relief.

Thought about getting a SAD lamp. Going to a tanning booth wouldn't seem right.

Yeah, I have Vitamin D deficiency for two reasons one being lack of sunlight. I have to take prescription strength Vitamin D.

I get SAD and so does my mom in the winter, not as bad in Eastern Washington, but it still hits us. My father is an electrician, and he helped me set up some lights for drastically less than retail sets. I have two full spectrum fluorescent fixtures in my bedroom on the wall. They emit over 10,000 lux. The light feels so good in the winter, my room gets invaded by other family members who come in and just sit and read or whatch TV. The cats and dog like it too.

We don't absorb D from the sun; the light creates it in our skin/blood. It is somehow related to calcium.

The lights are supposed to effect melatonin or serotonin.
