Guys like Sheldrake get dismissed without a fair hearing. I honestly tried to find a skeptical exposition on his ideas but couldn't come up with much of anything.
Science is headed for a revolution - or a crash into a brick wall. They must explain the growth of forms using only genetic code AND the development of mind without a clear set of pre-existing rules. A huge shift will emerge - because there's no where else to go for explanations.
The one thing the Watchtower has right is that there is no little man (homonculus) at the controls.
There are forces we don't understand but that's no excuse to become "religious". Have you read "Mind and Nature - A Necessary Unity" Gregory Bateson.
I believe the forms are not written in the DNA but are a consequence of the complex loops and feedback that result from the activation of the DNA. You don't simply produce chemicals. The chemicals interact.
The idea that form appears as a result of various interactions is just a data compression scheme. I have worked with video compression first hand - if you compress too much, you lose the picture. You're still left with the problem of where the blueprint is.
Furthermore, the DNA code is the same in each cell in every organ. To produce different organs or body parts, you then must produce a mechanism MORE POWERFUL than the genetic code - so as to activate only specific areas of the code in specific areas. This fact, by itself, is highly suggestive of an ordering 'force' above and beyond the genes themselves.
