Have you heard those words? Perhaps a doctor or a nurse said them before administering a recommended treatment. Likely, you did not refuse to submit to the treatment simply to avoid the anticipated pain. Rather, you endured the pain in order to reap future healthful benefits. In extreme cases, acceptance or rejection of uncomfortable treatment could be a matter of life and death.

So started the above article. Bearing in mind the sensitive issue of child mistreatment, comparing it to professional medical treatment is a sad joke. The two are not comparable....but how many dubs will gulp this garbage down? 'oh...good illustration!!'

Thanks. Are they using the illustration to justify disfellowshipping or shunning or something?

No.....its the matter of child discipline.

Although we may not always require the attention of a medical practitioner, all of us as imperfect humans cannot do without discipline, or correction, even that which, at times, may be painful. (Jeremiah 10:23) Emphasizing this need on the part of children, the bible says: "Foolishness is tied up with the heart of a boy; the rod of discipline is what will remove it far from him."-Proverbs 22:15.

    Hey ISP,
I look back now and wished that I had never physically spanked my son. I use to spank him for dumb reasons like; not sitting still in the meetings, not being still on a Bible study, for wanting to play in the door to door work, not being still when we were invited over to someone elses house for dinner, or just a visit, ect. A lot of times I did not want to spank him but I felt that others would think that I was not training him properly if I did not. The sad part about this is that he really did not need to be spanked. He would listen to me when I talked to him. I never had to spank him at home.
I hate myself for being such a "bitch". I extremely dislike the ones that I allowed to control the dicipline of my child.
Thanks for that post. It allowed me to do a little "venting".

yea, i get it, we should beat the hell, i mean "foolishness" out of their kids, beat'em till the obey you. Would'nt want a small child to have any foolishness in their life. Didn't a JW couple just get arrested for handing out a biblical punishment of so many lashes, and their kid died from it. You would think after such negative publicity they would wake up.

    Hi Pureheart,

A lot of times I did not want to spank him but I felt that others would think that I was not training him properly if I did not.
I had a conversation some time ago with my sister about how our mothers' main reason for "discipline" always seemed to be "What will the REST OF THE CONGREGATION think about us?"...

Indeed, how important it is for J-dub parents to put on this display of [i]Theocratic diligence[/], lest someone should say "MY child would never behave like that..."

I guess it's all about putting on a show for the bros...

Whatever we did as Witnesses was based on how the others in the congregation would view it. They frown at us when a child cries too often or can't sit still. You must always be perfect in everything, yet they claim that we are all imperfect and make mistakes. But if you had a prolonged illness for instance, they eventually would consider you somewhat weak in the truth. If you do not comment often, they say something, if your time is low, they criticize you on that, if your hair is a little long, you are counseled by the elders or if you want to educate yourself by getting a higher education, you are looked down on. Yes, you have to walk a "narrow road of acceptable behavior by walking on a tight rope of so-called religious sanity". It's so unhealthy and abnormal as humans to treat each other that way - How many cases do we know where brothers (who are not strong in the truth) have become physically ill and needed to be hospitalized where very few Witnesses would comfort, help or even visit them. Of course, their family members who are not witnesses will visit them regularly or even acquaintances may show them more love than all the witnesses together! But then...if you are strong in the truth, you will be pampered, "loved", visited often with their deluge of false compassion based on outward observance...
