My mother with Jose Carreras. Picture taken about a month ago, at her 90th birthday party. She's a huge Opera fan and the two of them have been working together on a foundation he started after he was treated here for cancer.

I had a subcriptions to the New York City Opera, because it was affordable, and I bought tickets for the Metropotian Opera once in a while for a fantastic performance - if tickets were available. My interest was casual. Opera was not stressed in operaland. I want to learn about it with a friend whose main passion in life was opera. We joined the youth guild to get very cheap but decent tickets.

We raised money for the opera company by special dinners, marathons in Central Park, etc. They may have lost money on us but they want you addicted from a young age so when you are older, you will raise millions for the regular guild. After performances, we had coffee, dessert, and wine and the stars came to speak to us about the performance and where they trained. The hard core opera crowd was do diverse and interesting.

There would this amazing sensual vixen on stage - so sexy- and then I would see her in jeans and a T-shirt, a regular person like me.

I have never seen such fans in any setting as opera fans. Sports, rock- nothing compared to opera. Sadly, I enjoy performances on stage but not just passively listening to a CD or over the radio. I still listen to the MEt through Texaco on Saturdays. It was frustrating for me that I never heard what the true fans did.

Rock can reach me to the core. Opera was an interest. I think you need a lot of education to appreciate it. During college, I studied art. I am amazed at how much I love art now after decades of special gallery talks and going to the Met every week. If I were exposed to opera in the same manner, I am certain I would adore it. Many people who lived in Queens paid a fortune for tickets and never saw the finale b/c they had to get private buses back to Queens on time.

I like alot of forms of art. I like to expand my horizons and experience different forms of art, but opera has always been hard for me to appreciate.

Beks, or BOTR, or Jeff T, or anyone else with appreciation of opera, give me some tips. I don't speak Italian, so I am kind of lost on much of it. If you give me some tips on how to grasp the meaning, I would love to at least try to appreciate it.
