  Good comments all round but I'm going to put my neck on the chopping block and answer a little differently on the question; "Can we actually expect to "settle this once and for all..." by posting authoritative comments?"

  I'd say it depends on the question being asked. Usually we don't ask questions where we would expect everyone to agree - where would the fun be in that?! But those common ground questions are useful tools, like a diving platform helping you to reach deep water more easily.

  I am trying to stay true to my previous comment:
  I am not going to agree or disagree with anyone on this thread.

  There are questions about facts like: Does the Bible say anything about...? Is the average rainfall in Madagascar greater than....?
  These seem to fit what you are saying.
  
  There are common ground questions that many hope all will find agreement with, but even there, we don't come to an agreement: "Is WTS a dangerous mind-control cult?" "Is Ray Franz right when he says....?"

  Otherwise, please add further clarification on what you mean. Where is there an absolute common ground on JWN?

  Well, I'm glad of that - some things are better left alone.
