I understand it may be a natural gas rig, one that feeds into the ANR pipeline which runs Northeast from Louisiana to the Great Lakes

Conspiracy stories in 1....2....3...wait for it....
I'll oblige somewhat, LWT...
It's obvious that God has turned against the USA by allowing these catastrophies to happen in the Gulf. Katrina, the levees failing, BP oil rig and now this one. And you East Coasters better get your shit together. God's sending a warning right up the NC OBX just to get your attention. Snub your nose and he'll send another big one to make a direct hit.
Feel better now?

Their last form 10-K says 53% natural gas, 47% oil and NGLs.

The rig, Vermillion Oil Rig 380, is owned by Mariner Energy. Bloomberg reports Mariner stock fell $1.15, or 4.9 percent, $22.20 at 11:32 EDT a.m. in New York composite trading.
Vermillion Oil Rig 360 is a gas and oil rig in 450 feet of water in South Timbalier Block 316, according to company records. But an AP report this morning says the Department of Homeland Security stated the rig, which is not currently producing oil and gas, is in about 2,500 feet of water.
The oil industry publication upstreamonline.com is reporting that the Mariner Energy structure is believed to be a manned, fixed steel production platform piled to the seabed, which also serves as a junction point for numerous pipelines.
So is it Vermilion 360, or 380? Is it 450 feet deep underwater, or 2500?

I wonder if there is some "natural disturbance" in the area causing this?
