It does with cult members. Everything you say, no matter how kindly you put it, is construed as an attack on them personally, or on their cult/god/guru.
That is their resentment, not yours. My response would be "put me on your fourth step."
Come to think of it, I'd love to do that to a JW, the puzzled look on their faces would be worth the price of admission.

I doubt that any of my Dubs would have a clue what you are talking about.

If I want to make a point with my Dubs, it has to be something 'gets in' real easy. Cryptic doesn't work.

Although, I agree, cryptic doesn't work on JW's.
I just read the 12 steps at Wikipedia.
#1) They smack of cultishness. Including step 5. Confession gives other people power over you. The greater the 'sin' the greater their power. It is used by high control groups from large churches to one on one abusers.
#2) Step 4 is OK, but every JW will look you in the eye and tell you they have already done that. That doesn't make it true. It is just something they have convinced themselves of. For them to get the point you are trying to make, you have to know something about their history that you can bring up to remind them that they are in no position to claim the moral high ground (see #1)
I've spent five years in AA. It is not a cult. Although I don't actually care what anybody else thinks about it, I've just found it to be the most useful thing I've ever done.
And no, they guy who heard my 5th step has no particular power over me. Mainly because, like everybody else in AA, he's pretty much done all the same stuff. If you can picture it, imagine going to an elder to tell him you've been masturbating and his response was a shrug and "who hasn't?"
