Well...if there were a female Tarantula in the cage with me.....one that wasn't too hairy and had looong legs....eight as a matter of fact....I'd say.....

Living in Australia, you tend to get used to spiders. I used to play with red-back spiders as a kid.

Ah, excuse me? The first tarantula I ever saw in my life - while vacationig in Arizona - ah, I mean, while driving through Arizona to one of those horrible 8-day assemblies in Los Angeles, California - was as big as a small Chihuahua...
Big as a Thanksgiving dinner plate, in other words...
HECKUVA LOT bigger than a dinky ol' mouse!!
As to keeping it in captivity or setting it free - I'd turn it loose if I could do so in an area where I knew it'd be safe - no construction, no blasted dune buggies, no knuckleheads with guns...
Otherwise, I'd keep it home safe with me - and give it 'free time' - supervised, of course - in my yard...
That's what I do with my dog and my cats...
