Sylvia, isn't it true that there were a disproportionate number of black foot soldiers in Viet Nam, simply because many of them could not afford to avoid the draft through college or national guard appointments from the governor or other political friends?
In Your Opinion Who Is The WORST President In USA History?

Nick, from your comments, NO ONE was that good.

Fact is, minimus, that they all did some good in their terms, even Dubya. One of the toughest jobs in the world. That is one job I would not do for any money.

Exactly, dear Nickolas (peace to you!), which is exactly why I chose the ones that I did for the reasons that I did as to "worst" and "best." Given the words of the Declaration of Independence, on which this country was founded, and the Constitution's Bill of Rights (on which its government was organized)... and the very purpose of the OFFICE of President and its vow to uphold those creeds... my position is that regardless of all the good they did, those who allowed and perpetuated the African slavery institution and its Jim Crow replacements could not have done worse. And those who ended either of them could not have done better. EVERYTHING else they did... good or bad... falls somewhere in between.
I bid you all peace!

Yeah, I was actually impressed by your post, SA. Except that Grant was elected president for his outstanding leadership during the Civil War and did little to improve the lot of the freed slaves during his presidency. Johnson's great strides toward achieving justice and equality for blacks in the US were overshadowed by his escalation of the unjust war in Vietnam which, in his defense, he inherited from Kennedy. The hatred poured out toward Johnson over the war took the heart out of him. Civil rights would have otherwise been his legacy.

Johnson was one Crazy public figure, if people knew the crap he was up to in private they would have freaked, but he got the Civil Rights Acts in place and started the War On Poverty which had mixed blessings as a social remedy.
God I think of my High School buddies, circa 1965-67, who either died in Vietnam or came back crazier than hell from the stuff they did over there. What a colossal tragedy.

Good thing we learned our lesson, eh?

Of course.
That's the way the pendulum swings.
However, there were some who wanted to enlist.

I knew a lot of both, dear designs (peace to you!). Colossal tragedy is an understatement. If blacks were messed up by Jim Crow, blacks and a whole lot of others were messed up (even more) because of Vietnam. I think it's sad today that (1) some of us, in our ridiculous fear, apparently forgot about that era (or maybe we "missed" it because we were safely ensconced in our college studies and behind our gated communities, whatever), and (2) our children have no clue (and so, history is doomed to repeat itself).
Given the "people's" propoganda after Vietnam, I was "shocked and awed" when "we" engaged in Desert Storm (what, another war??? Did we learn NOTHING from Vietnam????). And so the invasion of Iraq was... IMHO, unthinkable. I couldn't wrap my head around it for a minute. I get that perhaps Osama Bin Laden/Al Quaeda needed to be dealt with (though, I have my thoughts as to the first - I mean, the U.S. can find Saddam Hussein hiding under a house and drag HIS butt out and have him put to death - he, who had no WMDs OR anything to do with 9/11)... but "we" can't find Bin Laden... still? Even 9 years later? No, no, of COURSE I don't think his being of the third most powerful Saudi family... or living in Pakistan... two of "our" closest allies ... has anything to do with that! He's just slippery, is all. Elusive. And really good at it, 'cause "we" can't find him and we ALWAYS get our man. Don't we??)
Anyway... applause for BB's comment (peace to you!).
Peace! Really!
