The problems usually arise not from gift giving per se, but from the soulless giving of gifts in obligation and expectation of gifts as an entitlement. Compare that to gifts given and received in expressions of love, so aptly related by O. Henry:

The magi, as you know, were wise men--wonderfully wise men--who brought gifts to the Babe in the manger. They invented the art of giving Christmas presents. Being wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones, possibly bearing the privilege of exchange in case of duplication. And here I have lamely related to you the uneventful chronicle of two foolish children in a flat who most unwisely sacrificed for each other the greatest treasures of their house. But in a last word to the wise of these days let it be said that of all who give gifts these two were the wisest. O all who give and receive gifts, such as they are wisest. Everywhere they are wisest. They are the magi.

As long as DY is happy with her decision and convinced that this is the right way for her, I am happy for her. If it would be other way around as it seems have been, I would be happy for that too. Just it is her personal faith and decision. I have no idea about her motives to continue writing here, she said that she wan't to fix things she has been doing, fine. Doing it here is like she would go and sit with Serbian supporters as German in soccer match Serbia-Germany in Belgrade. Courageous indeed but maybe not serving it's purpose.

Yeah, Christmas is hard on the pocket book but as others pointed out, but it is only once a year.

My wife spends money on hotels (upwards of $100 / night) during the ASS-emblies and I have repeatedely asked her where the heck she finds the money when asking her for money for Christmas is asking too much of her. Thankfully, she keeps her car junky as all get up so it won't become a Field Serve-Us vehicle. Thankful too that the District Conventions for her are right in our area so we (thankfully) avoid the hotel expenses there too.

Funny how her parents who seem to constantly ask their kids (namely my wife) for money because they cannot pay their bills always manages to find money to fund their hotel stays at all the conventions (not to mention their rental cars and eating out while there). I've had to personally talk to her dad about this as I did not appreciate him asking my wife for money behind my back and her giving it to him without consulting me about it. All the while telling me that she has a right to spend our money any way she wants to.

I love Christmas! I plan for it. I take $50. a month and put it into my christmas fund. I also collect all my coin in one of those coin jars all year for a bonus.

That way I am not stressed at all as I am prepared.

I haven't done this yet but will next year , put little suggestions for gift ideas as they come up throughout the year, on a little slip of paper and slip it into the coin jar also.

I just went shopping for some more presents today and am having a ball.

I have a budget and try to stick to it as much as possible.

That way no stress and I am free to relax and enjoy it. I try and get gifts that I think they will use and appreciate. Personal gifts that will help them or bring enjoyment to their life. If you listen when talking to your frienids and loved ones you can pick up hints ...if you really listen..

Snoozy..who is also Paying it forward on Dec 1st!

    DY,

You are just a tight ass, and gloating. "JW's give presents all year long." That is sooooooooooooooo much bullshit! You are a dolt.

JW's are some of the most materialistic people I know. Who else wants rich people to die, so they can move into their houses?

I hope you realize your coworkers were just kidding around with you DY. Not too many people would want to trade a little credit card enslavement for life long enslavement to a book publishing cult.

What do the Witnesses do at Christmastime that is so much better that what non-dubs do? Let's compare:

What non-Witnesses do: What Witnesses do:

Give money and food to those less fortunate than them. Give money to a book publishing cult.

Go out caroling for the joy of it. Go out distributing cult literature because they have to.

Go to parties with friends and family. Go to meetings and study magazines with pictures of Jesus killing all non JWs.

Try to bring some joy into peoples lives. Try to make others brainwashed slaves of book publishing cult.

Gee, I don't know. Which sounds like more fun and is better for mankind?

People that are willing to reason ultimately accept that holidays being a Jehovah's Witness is are largely based on lies or unacceptable behavior for a person considered a Christian. However, they prefer to continue with the tradition as usual.

    Fixed.
