But how many of those times was religion an excuse, rather than a cause?
If it is the excuse it's a part of the cause.

In many espects the world will be a better place! For one, there will be no JW's and all the suffering (and death) they have caused to people, no shuning, less broken families, no child abuse cover ups, no hypocrisy...and the list is very long.
Also the world perhaps will be less divided, less hatred...less religious madness and what it leads to..suicide bombers is one example, and all the other killing in the name of Allah .
"Would the human adopt a selfish attitude demanding all they could get?"
Are you suggesting that believers in god are not selfish, demanding all they could get? Come on..are we talking about the same planet? In my experience many/most religious people are the most selfish people I have met...Jw's are just one example, but by no means the only one.
"Would they care about each other?"
Are you suggesting that believers of god care about each other more than non believers? Im not sure if I should laugh or cry here...
All I have seen so far pointing to the possibility that religious faith is a form of mental illness that the world can do without.
Just like this one.
Elton John said it best in his song.
"Imagine all the people..."
I think Terry made an excellent point - the IDEA of God is all that could go away, since no God's actual existence has ever been fully demonstrated by anyone.
I believe the world would be a far better place if not influenced by religion at all [and no believers too].
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today... Imagine there's no countries
It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace... You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world... You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one
To imagine humans evolving from the start without belief in gods would be just an exercise because it didn't happen.
But to imagine humans finally reaching a point where they can let go of gods would most likely be fantastic. I imagine it will happen one day. We will outgrow such silly notions of one Almighty just as we did with Mount Olympus and all those gods.
Meanwhile, the believers in the one Almighty will keep killing each other over their differences in believing what He wants from them or what they can use Him as a scapegoat for.
Aww c'mon Jeff I posted that first...
Meanwhile, the believers in the one Almighty will keep killing each other over their differences in believing what He wants from them or what they can use Him as a scapegoat for.
Those people who 'believe' in him just to use him as a scapegoat, would just find another scapegoat if there was no God.
(although my actual answer to the question is: what world?)

Religion does accentuate peoples' basic natures, or damp them down. However, their basic natures aren't changed, that much. I believe that it's the more a case of the other way around, ie, people choose their religions that suit their basic natures. So, conservatives may choose conservative religions, be it fundy christian, fundy islam, or just conservative atheist. Same w liberals: they could choose a liberal religion like the universalists, be tree hugging hippies, take up wicca, be secular humanists, etc.
Peoples' ideas of god fit the same template.
