quest61: why do we get the TTATT and others don't?
Because we can see the lie.
For whatever reason, we are included in the number of people who have the ability to perceive deception better than most. On average, a person is only able to spot a lie 53% of the time. We score better than that.
It isn't so much that we can see the truth - because 'truth' is such a nebulous thing and personal in nature, we already know our truth - it is because we can spot the lie.
And we are among that part of the population that doesn't like being lied to. That doesn't take brains or skill, it only takes guts. Courage and honesty. Anybody can have that, if they so dare.

Billy!
That picture makes me laugh so much...
It works on two levels. The obvious one re head in the sand, and also that it shows we were all in a position to be 'abused' by the GB!

Why do we see the truth and others don't?
Did anyone ask themselves that question when you were out in service?
I'll bet not.
The witless people are trained to obey.

Some people get exposed to the ugly side of JW's more than others when it comes to shunning or marking or cliques or double standards with favoritism for the "in" crowd and harsh treatment for the "out" crowd.
In other cases, a person is kicked out for breaking various rules and that leads to them investigating the religion. Or similarly, a person who is in may be disturbed by a particular change in the teachings because the way it was understood was ingrained in him or very important to him. Many others don't pay attention to the details and just figure that smarter/more spiritual people than them have it all figured out.

What you just said is the perfect explanation for why some see TTATT and others don't. It comes down to personal experiences. Some people are not experiencing anything bad or maybe they are the ones dishing it out to others, so they do not need to find TTATT. Everyone on this forum has a story and it is the story they have, no matter what it is that planted seeds of doubt and therefore they were led in one way or another to research or study outside the blue square.

I don't know if my experience is similar to anyone else's?! Looking back on things, I gradually stopped a lot of jw activity before learning TTATT. For the best part of 2 1/2 years before I first encountered the UN scandal I hadn't answered at meetings and only made a token appearance in service. Having our first child was great as i could now 'legitimately' count time without knocking on doors :)
I always felt I wasn't doing enough but at the same time couldn't bring myself to make more of an effort.
I believe I'd made a subconscious decision that things weren't right for some reason. Perhaps the monotony of it all just got too much, I've always got bored quickly when I was younger and remember the meetings droning on about the same old bs week after week. I don't think there was a week that went by when porn or masterbation wasn't discussed!!!
I totally agree with everyone though, the triggers seem different from one person to another. I guess it boils down to what TTATT someone is exposed to and what stage they're at in life.
The UN NGO scandal got the ball rolling for me... these days the protection of peadophiles is my no.1 pet hate of the org.
