I'm an hour from jasper, but I don't know anyone in that cong. And if there was something like that going on, no one I know who's still in would tell me.
Interesting, I wonder what the contributions were for.

You know, if I was wondering about this story, wouldn't you want to call the KH and ask about it? Do a google maps-Jasper , Ga, then do "search nearby"
= one KH with two Congs meeting there and 2 phone numbers. Sometimes I think people here enjoy rumors more than finding out the facts.
Moshe, I'd be really surprised if any JW that answered that phone confirmed any of that. Looks bad, you know?
I would tell them I heard they wanted to put a contribution barrel in the KH to collect canned goods for the local food pantry- When would be a good time to drop it off?

Lol! Does WTS take canned goods, too? If they don't, someone should tell that cong.
I have always wanted to call all the KH's in a major city and ask them to do just that and take down the elder's name who turned me down -- then write a letter to the newspaper and report that the JW's refused 100% to help the poor and needy in the community.
If this can be confirmed, (Bethel demanding donations collected for locals), I think the local newspaper should be contacted to report on.

I kind of like Moshe's idea: "we're calling all the churches in the area for a report on how effective efforts have been in helping needy children in our community. It's been confirmed that we have xxx hundreds of children that live below the poverty level in our city alone. What would you say has been your church's most successful outreach program to help these ones? Are there any kind of local charitable drives that you're sponsoring that you would like your neighbors in need to know about? We also will be listing all that churches' various aid-for-the-needy options that are offered for the community. It's part of our comprehensive "community helping hands" list. So far, in addition to spiritual guidance, every church we've contacted has listed one or two programs available to their church members and the community. Some include drug and alcohol recovery assistance, senior visitation, battered women help, and orphan programs. What similar programs do you offer and what is the best way for those with that specific hardship to be contacted by you and receive assistance?"
I'll never forget the time I was out in service in NYC on an rv in the projects. Turned out the guy was a crack addict. First time I ever saw one in real life. You know what we offered to do for him - a bible study and prayer. Yeah I'm sure that worked out great.
I do know one elder around my age from there but I have not spoke to him for a long time. It would be very interesting if he comes to this board telling us whats up there.
Contact the local press and ask if they've heard of any uproar. ;)
