Remember also that Hebrew was a dead language until the re-establishment of Isreal. The King James translators, when they came across an object word (such as fig, pomegranate, or acacia), made a "best guess" on what was meant. The original meanings are lost in the sands of time. For example, shittah (Hebrew) was translated to acacia, the translators assuming that it had to be a native tree in abundance in the Sinai.
Another example are behemoth and leviathan, two enormous creatures in context, that no-one is quite sure today what they were.
So a "fig leaf" may have been the large leaf of any plant, and has been traditionalized in to a fig.

This prairie girl can't stand seafood, but I think it is because I don't have access to fresh. It is all stinky to me. Now, give me a Kobe Filet Mignon and I am in delectible heaven.
I betcha a fresh fig ripe off the tree would be a delight.
