March 1, 2011 WT Kool Aid edition...

The article: Does the Bible Condemn Gambling

    Notice the highlighted boxes...

First the indication that the Catholic Church does not consider gambling itself a sin... and then challenges that because no Scriptural passages are given in proof of their assertion.

The very next column though, the WTS admits that the Bible does not directly mention gambling. So, um, how do you expect the Catholics to come up with scriptures if there are none?

But does that stop the WTS from going behind what's written? Of course not... they'll go on "perceiving the will of God" on their own even without direct Scriptural proof. The rest of the article goes on perceiving until...

...we get to the WTF moment...

On the last page of the article comes the claim that there are "many scriptures related to the subject of gambling".

OK...which is it? Does the Bible not directly address gambling or are there many scriptures related to the subject?

    Really... WTF?

    And... as an aside WTF...

Notice how they say "instead of issuing rules governing every situation..." (which is exactly what the Catholic church didn't do in this instance) but then they go on to issue a governing on the subject anyway...

    Again... WTF?

Good catch and analysis! Their conclusion actually refers to scriptures that talk about money, but they insert gambling there instead. Looks like another poorly written article has slipped by the ever watchful eye of the boys in the ivory tower.

This is actually in the public WT. Good idea WT, alienate more peotential recruits by condemning something that probably 75% of the population engages in from time to time, without any real scriptural backing.

I'm constantly amazed at how I never realized to what degree they 'go beyond the things written'. Thanks for posting this, bud - good catch on the double speak!

Why the hell didn't I just do what I wanted and wear pants to the meeting, go outside for a smoke break and head out to the casino afterwards?

A Christian, therefore, cannot be baptized in the name of the one actually doing the immersing or in the name of any man, nor in the name of any organization, but in the name of the Father, the Son and the holy spirit. This shows, among other things, that Christianity is not a denominational affair, that sects have nothing to do with it. "Does the Christ exist divided? Paul was not impaled for you, was he? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? I am thankful I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, so that no one may say that you were baptized in my name."—1 Cor. 1:13-15,

How hypocritical, when I stopped going 5 years ago, there was an elders's son-in-law in my cong that convinced everyone (not just in my cong, but worldly's too), to invest in a finance company that gives high returns, and of course was investing in high risk ventures(to me that is gambling with other peoples money). Anyway the cocompany went broke because he syphoned all the money with the help of his brother and nephew and declared himself broke, even though in his wifes name there was over $10 million in assets and money. Lots of pensioners and elderly people lost their life savings. The company was called "Fincorp", it was in Australia and nothing at all happened to him or his family. Yet if they see you buy a $2 lottery ticket and they'll come after you. Go figure.

Has anyone noticed that these so-called "Balanced View" articles published in The Watchtower and Awake magazines always present negative aspects of the subject, no matter what it is?

    Is that really being balanced?

From the artwork, we can safely assume that a significant number of JWs are enjoying Internet gambling and Texas Hold 'Em, etc, IMHO.
