Yet they would have us bet our lives and throw away any aspirations of personal achievement on their flimsy "you won't die, much less grow old in this old system" pot of (fool's) gold!

Why do watchtower photos always have someone dressed like the gimp in the left of that last photo? Chinos and a coloured polo shirt - does anyone in real life actually wear clothes like this??? or is it an american thing?

    No, it's a WTS thing.

When they started using photos in the publications instead of drawings, young people who were being held up as "righteous" examples were usually portrayed very vanilla-bland in appearance; maybe to "discourage" looking too attractive, which might draw attention towards the individual, and away from the Truth(TM).

Besides, "worldy" kids wore ripped jeans, slogan T-shirts, and extra piercings, therefore, JW kids should look the opposite. Never mind the fact that when a kid stands out from the crowd that much, he may as well be wearing a big fat bullseye. Then again, from what I've read about Rutherford essentially implementing policies that would deliberately provoke "persecution", this shouldn't be surprising.

They changed it up a bit in the 90s with the advent of higher-production quality multimedia; young JWs were portrayed a bit more classy in dressing habits and certainly more good-looking; I remember being so relieved that older folks would finally stop pressuring me to look like an extra from Freaks and Geeks.

The relative liberalness of the 90s is definately come and gone, though. If they really are battening down the hatches in upstate NY, winnowing for ideological purity will have kicked into high gear by now; "encouraging" what amounts to a bland physical appearance would be just one of many symptoms; remember, "instructions from the GB that may be difficult to understand" (paraphrasing, but you get the gist).

And don't forget that atheists always have beards!

Personally, I get a lot more mileage out of idiotic Awake! articles. Their theology might be crazy, but the level of crazy demonstated by their "understanding" of culture and human behavior is breathtaking.

Yah those articles of use your own conscience but then they go on to say what a good jdub would do are weird. I love the ones that go on to say they aren't spirit inspired especially after a huge failure in predictions .1 minute they have everything all figured out and jehovah is in the driver seat the next it's all a bunch BS.

I'm with Minimus on the voting issue, I'll never forget about five plus years ago someone on the this site gave the exact page in the Bound Volume of Awake from 1961 of 1962 saying that Jdubs could vote, of course my Ishowed it to my mom and she said, well of course we can vote, but then if I bought up the question a week later . . . we know what she would've said.

And let us not forget the ever popular photo of the Bethel Family celebrating CHristmas with the tree in the background

Pailmsest - "Their theology might be crazy, but the level of crazy demonstated by their "understanding" of culture and human behavior is breathtaking."

Breathtaking? Sure. Crazy? Not so sure.

It's designed (intentionally or otherwise) to alienate the R&F from "worldly" culture and human behavior. The flaw inherent is that it presumes that it can construct a better alternative that can sustain itself, while in reality, it mirrors the culture and behavior it eschews in many ways.

Human behavior is human behavior, no matter where it is.

About 2-3, 4 years a study article comparing Jeh to a rock badger (rodent), a gecko (lizard), and a third critter I can't remember. I was sitting in ther hall listening to this thinking "oh my god......" Anyone remember that article? I' like to reference it for laughs.
