If the WT Society keeps getting coverage in the media about countless child abuse scandals- give it time- I believe ABC or PBS or some other major network WILL go after them. If they've gone after Scientology, Catholics, and Mormons - it's only a matter of time before MANY of WT Society's dark secrets are exposed.
That being said- I'm VERY glad this HBO documentary on Scientology took place. My wife and I are listening to it on you tube right now. Scientology is like Jehovah's Witnesses on steroids. The leaders are dangerous, violent, and many of the tendencies and shunning practices are VERY much like the JW cult. People need to be warned about the danger . Don't worry people- this will happen in an exposed fashion to the WT Society. Karma WILL come and bite them in the ass ; just like Scientology. Spread the word

There are two important key aspects to a organization self designating itself as religion.
One being that it avails the group to come up with their outlandish ideas and openly sell those ideas to the public without government regulation or restraint, as well have a higher body of governance control of what they present.
The second which is perhaps lesser but still important is that the organization can take any amount of money from people and not have any legal responsibility placed on the organization to return that donated money or money acquired by selling paraphernalia and purchased by people.
So combine the forwarding pretentiousness of helping humanity with the want and greed of money, power and control, with an open non restrictive capability within a designated religious stature and you wonder why so many religious cults start up and thrive in countries like the US.

Dang and the new mission impossible looks so good. The doc mad a good case for Cruise being complicit though because they put him in a bubble. Its good to be the king over there. Bad to be a subject.
I highly recommend the book "Going Clear". It reads like fiction and is very entertaining. It speaks to someone who is or was a JW, and JW's get an honorable mention towards the back of it.

One thing that I caught and have assumed myself is that like the JW publishing cult, the Scientologists are successful in luring in young naive and gullible people who have no perception of what is really going on as a whole from the top executive directors, who hand down directives to the lower positioned ones within the organization. who are faithfully endeavored to sustain their own position and the possibility of gaining greater spiritual power, described as getting clear.
Considering that most of the people that L Ron Hubbard himself lured were young easy to manipulate adults and then young adults such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta .
That models very closely to the JW cult in that it too lures in mostly young impressionable unknowing adults.

If you have a spouse who you are trying to get out, you absolutely must casually get them to sit down and watch this program with you. Carefully watch their reaction if possible for possible talking points to use in the future.
I'm surprised too OneEyedJoe that your wife didn't pull some of the similarities. The section at the end where they talk about disconnection (Scientology version of DF) should cause any JW to feel extremely uncomfortable.

Did anyone else notice the parallels between the personality of L. Ron Hubbard and J. F. Rutherford?

I haven't watched the documentary yet. Do Scientologists present "going clear" as an attainable goal, now, or is the brass ring constantly raised?
I ask because for JWs, the only way to "go clear" is to:
1) Be a GB ( highest level ) and go to heaven.
2) Be a R&F ( never good enough/always reaching ) and be perfect someday in the future, AFTER an indeterminate amount of time ( the rest of the system ) plus 1,000 years and a final test.
So for most dubs, "going clear" NEVER happens! They spend their lives in constant pursuit of a goal that is purposely withheld from them by their leaders.

Just saw it, and the similarities are eerie...but Scientology is another level of crazy compared to JW's! The "disconnecting" smacks of DF'ing, and you can be labeled a Suppressive Person for something as simple as asking a question of their leadership. If you leave and talk against them, you are labeled a squirrel, and they send "squirrel hunters" to harass and damage that dissenter anyway they can. It is one scary high control group!! -

This documentary was great. Very informative. It would be good for any ex-JW to watch to see the comparisons to the JW cult. The mind control is very similar. If any of you get a chance to watch " Going Clear " on you tube exposing the injustices of Scientology I highly recommend it
