I saw the documentary a few days ago. It was quite an eye opener.

In the documentary I noticed the active believers did not respond well to criticism on camera. That may have been on purpose for the documentary. I remember L. Ron Hubbard and one of the ex-wives told their interviewers, “shame on you” or “that was rude of you” about a remark they did not want to challenge. It’s hard to defend a belief system that has no facts to support it. I can imagine why they are so upset.

One lesson I learned from the show is that if you cross a Scientologist they will get even with you as a group. They even black mailed leading IRS employees to get their tax exempt status. I found it very interesting that the higher the levels of Clear you go the more dirt the organization will have on you for blackmail. When a member finds out you’re having doubts they will task special members to scour your Auditing sessions for any form of dirt to keep you quiet.

Finally I now know why they have an erupting volcano on the Dianetics book cover.

A leader of an over populated alien world sent people of that world to our planet and dropped them into earth’s volcanos. After detonating atom bombs within those volcanoes the souls of the alien people, called body thetans, began roaming the earth invisibly. Life’s mental problems are a result of being possessed by these body thetans. The Auditing sessions reveal the life experiences of these body thetans. The goal is to get these beings purged from your mind. There could be many in one person. That is why you try to attain higher levels of Clear. You’re clearing out the aliens from your mind. This is all I could gather from the film.

Lost Generation, I actually did exactly what you suggested last night. HBO is having a free week on our cable, and i found "going Clear" on demand. I had mentioned days ago this was supposed to be a fascinating documentary on Scientology, to my husband. He said he would like to see it (?!?) So last night we did just that. I called him in told him about this free week I just noticed, he asked ME if I wanted to watch it right then. I of course agreed. I had a hard time looking over to see his reactions without seeming like I was being obvious. But the mother drying over her daughter caused him to get so uncomfortable he groaned and turned his head a bit. ( He is in denial thinking that the JW ever shun unless it is for a serious sin, never anything else, and will say he agrees with it when it is necessary to turn people away from sinful behavior) I am not sure what his reaction really meant. I hope it was disgust and a moment of connecting. A few times he laughed at absurdities. A few times i would look over say, this is crazy, and he would agree with a weird look on his face.

We didn't speak about the movie after, except commenting on how crazy the leaders were, how crazy the people seemed, but then I said, "how about those interviewed having spent 20 30 years in there then leaving, they didn't seem crazy at all did they?" He said "no".

He wanted to immediately go to get ready for bed. I stayed downstairs and eventually fell asleep. I found out he was awake until 2:30 or so all over the house, on the computer not sure what else. He had a need to get away from me asap after this show. Interesting. yet he couldn't get to sleep.

I can only hope this planted some sort of seed or crack. Something to simmer in his mind. I am sure he also focused on the ways JW are not like Scientology, trying to rationalize, or separate everything he could. But there are parts of this documentary where it is extremely difficult to separate the similarities of the two.

    Fascinating.

I am so glad I heard about this movie so I could find it and do this. I am glad my husband agreed to watch it ( likely part to "prove" he was not afraid to discuss cults though he is, and how, of course, the JW are not like a cult at all) Hmmmmm

I have noticed the headlines recently about how John Travolta has commented that he has not seen the documentary and he continues to speak positively about Scientology just like other people in similar cults. A lot of people that are in cults do not have much concern for others pain or abuse. They only take action if they are personally effected. Do you think that could damage his popularity? Some people might be just seeing some of this weird Scientology for the first time. It’s hard for me to have respect for John Travolta and Tom Cruise and other celebrities that support dangerous rackets like this.
