ive found that if i dont bring stuff up, they are willing to let it be in the background, but if i or my behaviour challenges them in any way then they close up again,

It really is true. There is no comparison between the joy and love felt in my home today and that which we had while JWs. None. They're an incredibly unhappy group, constantly dwelling on all the negatives the world has to offer. It is sad that there are so many millions trapped in cultish situations that sap their humanity, love, and joy, that sap their entire present lives based on false promises of a future paradise. Just thinking about it makes me feel like I have some responsibility to do all I can to help free the ones that I can to whatever limited extent that's possible.

I know how it is to look for an anniversary card for your parents and think "How do I find a card for two people that only stay together
for the sake of religion, when there is no love, they don't even joke with each other, and in fact they hate each other!?"
I say to keep it minimal, but you did the right thing (one day your children WILL ask and at least you'll be able to say you tried).

PARALIPOMENON- I'm sorry you have to go through this with your JW parents. I totally empathize. I go through the same thing with my 23 and 22 yr.old JW daughters. Trying to be the bigger person DOES get tiring when you send pictures of family, or write cards, or call - and get NO response whatsoever. Gets tiring emotionally . Sometimes I feel like giving up as well, but I keep hoping like Steve Hassan says that in time that in cult family members something will click or happen that makes them REALLY analyze their life . Some injustice towards them inside the cult, something, ANYTHING - that will wake them the hell up.
Just keep doing what you are doing my friend, you just never know what will happen in this life. Hang in there
I see my mother shunning me as a blessing. My stepkids and now grandkids will never be influenced by the Watchtower cult. I will never again be surrounded by false, judgemental people whose idiocy is only transcended by their cruelty. DNA doesn't make family, but love and compasson do.
Jamiebowers is right your kids don't need people who think like they do in their life. Your parents can't even see that they are the ones causing the problem. They don't respect your beliefs or feelings. They won't ever show love to you unless you come crawling back and believe everything written by those old farts in Brooklyn. Old farts they have probably never even met yet are willing even turn their backs on their family when those evil old men tell them to. It is very sad and very crazy.
