I even had family (not mine) that told me that Jehovah diciplines those he loves and that he must REALLY love me. For a while I believed it. I was in denial. I let it define me for a time. But eventually I realized that I was still the same person, I had not changed. they were trying to make out to be someone that I was NOT. REALITY SET IN......then the doubt......
If this was indeed the way it worked then the advice you decribed would be well placed senitment.
But for that to work it implies that God works through the men of the congregation. An interesting concept, no? You wont ever hear an Elder telling you that God is speaking through him that isn't strictly repremanded. You see, they pick and chose from conflicting concepts to suit their agenda.
On one hand if you are DF'ed God must love you because he is singling out your behaviour for correction because you are important. On the other hand these men have been known to make blatent, and sometimes juvenile, mistakes so it's possible that your experience was just the whim of men. So which is it? What rules need be applied to answer this riddle?
The answer is that it is a trick. It's designed to induce ethical confusion. When in this state the brain must resolve the issue, this is the point where the control of the mind is attempted. A very precise move, no? It always works even if a little, that's why it takes longer for some and shorter for others.
It's brilliance actually, and was originall designed to extract harmful thoughts from the subconcious. But some people got a hold of the technique and have been using it ever since for whatever agenda they feel so inclined to further.
