Facebook: Local Ruling By Elders in Nearby Congregation

This is usually the work of a rogue body of dumbasses. I've seen elders make stupid rules only to have the CO come along and yank the rug out from underneath them. But it is interesting how local bodies of elders come to create and enforce rules like that.

I happen to know a Bethel elder who is on Facebook. He doesn't post a lot, or of anything noteworthy, but he's on there and he uses it to stay connected with family and friends back home.

I wonder if an elder body would reconsider their decision if they personally knew elders and Bethelites who used the network similarly?

The elders were quite happy to use facebook (and JWN) evidence as the basis for proving our apostate leanings.

They were probably influenced by the negative light thrown on Facebook and social networking at the recent School for Elders and MS.

Things like married witnesses would find older flames or new love interests on Facebook and eventually wreck their marriages, or the anecdote about ~50 (IIRC) young teens who used Facebook to plan a wild party. Then after a few of them were "found" to have attended by their elders, they tried to spread the word about the "investigation" to other teens so they could cover their tracks. Darn that internet.

pretty soon they're going to ban texting....the kids could have spread that information just the same through text messages.....the issue isn't the technology, it's the way people use it. If someone is going to do something inappropriate, they are going to do it regardless. "The technology made me do it" is not a valid plea.

Back in about 2005, 2 of the elders in my old hall spent an entire Saturday looking up every person in the congregation to see if they were on Myspace. They then went to the guilty parties and told them they needed to get off immediately. We even had a Needs of the Congregation talk on it and apparently they found about 25 people in the hall on Myspace - you should have heard the gasps when that number was announced - all coming from older ones who did not have a clue what Myspace was.
