"But I might get DF'd." We can only hope, and then we can have a big celebration party.

My last trip to Hawaii I joined the YWCA because it was right next to where I was working and they offered a week free, which was about the length of my trip, so I got to stretch and exercise before going to work. And then about a decade earlier I lived at another YWCA for about a month because it was about the cheapest place to stay while in Hawaii. It was pretty cool because it was dorm-style living with a roommate and I actually hadn't had that experience in college (sharing a single room) because I lived at home when I was an undergrad and I had a full apartment as a grad student. Anyway, I felt so much like an apostate doing that. lol

I don't think there is any current admonition to abstain from joining a YMCA by Jehovah's Witnesses. My wife and I were considering joining one, it's cheaper than the gym and much closer.

I looked into it HEAVILY and only found some articles in the 70s that had to do with it. They did specifically say that it would be an act of 'apostasy'. However, the organization no longer has any religious affiliations (other than the fact that their official creed says something about Judeo-Christian values). All of their money comes from corporate sponsers, members, and the government.

I seriously doubt you would get disfellowshipped for joining.

We did both decide that we should probably keep it private if we did join, just in case it bothered someone else's conscience.

The YMCA still is involved with promoting "Christian" principles per their charter. Check out Wikipedia. I think you'd still get the ax from the Organization for being a "member".

You still can get disfellowshipped, but the local elders might not know it or might not be such jerks to bother to find out about it.

...meh...I would think if you were in an ultra conservative congregation, the Elders might try to hang you on it. My body is far too liberal for something like that. They would just tell you not to tell anyone if they found out.

The Jehovah's Witnesses used to hold assembly's at local YMCA facilities. You can read experiences about it in the Yearbooks.

Isn't it amazing that the organization that considers itself to be THE Christian faith is steadfastly opposed to any other organization that has "Christian" in the name?

What about Mark 9:38-40: "John said to Jesus, "Teacher, we saw a man using your name to cast out demons, but we told him to stop because he isn't one of our group." 39 "Don't stop him!" Jesus said. "No one who performs miracles in my name will soon be able to speak evil of me. 40 Anyone who is not against us is for us."

Rather undercuts the WT stance on such matters, doesn't it?

Evidently, the FDS has received new light on this issue.

I was thinking about the YMCA's mandates while I was smashing the ball with my raquet.

Funny that you bring up that scripture, Ding. I used that with my MIL this weekend and she was shocked to read it. She's been a JW since the 60's. And she got the point right away. She even said, "Boy, that sure takes away the argument that only people in the organization can be saved." Pretty interesting stuff.
