the JWs side of the story:

Police side with mob in attack against Christian women in India

DAVANAGERE, India—Two women were attacked by an angry mob in Karnataka State after comforting a grieving neighbor who had lost her husband. One of the women was beaten, and both were detained by police.

Two women who are Jehovah’s Witnesses were invited into the home of their neighbor in the city of Davanagere, located in central India, on the morning of December 20, 2010. The Witnesses had met the woman a few years ago and were seeking to share a positive thought from the Bible with her after learning that her husband had died. The neighbor expressed gratitude for the comforting message, especially since one of the Witnesses was herself a widow. However, upon leaving the home, the women were confronted by a man who falsely accused them of converting people [italics mine] and threatened to make trouble for them.

Minutes after the Witnesses returned to the home belonging to one of the women, a mob surrounded the house. Led by the man who had threatened trouble, the mob entered the home by force and began screaming obscenities at the women inside, calling one of them a prostitute. Ignoring all attempts to reason, the mob began destroying religious literature. The attackers called some women standing outside and told them to beat the two Witnesses. Consequently, the female members of the mob began to beat one of the women and forcibly prevented either of them from escaping. The police arrived on the scene, but instead of dispersing the mob, they took the two Witnesses into custody and brought them to the station for questioning, where the women were forced to sign papers that they were not allowed to read. The Witnesses were eventually taken into custody, arrested and charged for blasphemy under Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code. The two women were granted bail by the magistrate the following evening.

One of the victims relates, “During the entire incident the police made no effort to disperse the mob and restore public order. Our complaint was neither registered as a First Information Report nor recorded in the police diary; instead a Report was made using false information about what we said and did.” She added, “Even when we were at the police station, the mob gathered and began to assault our friend who came to assist us.”

This is the most recent incident in a growing trend of unchecked mob violence against this Christian faith. Documented cases show that it is not uncommon for the local police to align themselves with the attacking mob or to stand idle, watching as the mob destroys the personal property of Jehovah’s Witnesses or physically assaults them.

At present, there are over 30,000 Jehovah’s Witnesses in India, who worship in more than 400 congregations.

And while these two women are on the frontlines being physically, the GB are sitting back comfortably in Brooklyn enjoying their lifestyles and probably preparing for a first class flight to the caribbean.....

....I mean to say "physically assaulted".

The following is my opinion and I have no personal knowledge of the facts. I assume Watchtower's version of things is similar- no personal knowledge of the facts:

I tend to automatically assume that Watchtower is exaggerating or mis-reporting. I can imagine the female members of the "mob" were two women. Add one or two men to the "mob" and you have 3 or 4 people.

To even mention "destroying religious literature" shows how this mob was not so dangerous and violent. (Some WT literature was torn up.) As far as "beating" the JW woman, it offers no detail of a need for medical attention and switches to preventing her from escaping from her own home. That typically means there was "some" physical contact.

I don't know Indian law, but the JW's probably broke it. Oh, it might not be as minor as I imagine, but I am confident it wasn't as terrible as the report tries to make it seem.

Sad to say that JW's used to report how their brothers and sisters refused to sign papers to get out of Nazi concentration camps. These women gave in right away to signing something, so the spin is that they were not allowed to read it. That is probably their own fault, as I know I would not sign the papers until I read them, even if they were about to break my arm. If there were some physical force to sign, Watchtower would have mentioned that too, so these women knew they were violating some law and signed to get out of trouble and go home.

Section 295A in The Indian Penal Code, 1860
    Central Government Act
295A. [ Deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.-- Whoever, with deliberate and malicious intention of outraging the religious feelings of any class of [ citizens of India], [ by words, either spoken or written, or by signs or by visible representations or otherwise] insults or attempts to insult the religion or the religious beliefs of that class, shall be punished with imprisonment of either description for a term which may extend to [ three years], or with fine, or with both.]

And from Wikipedia, Hate speech laws in India. "Section 95 of the Code of Criminal Procedure gives the government the right to declare certain publications “forfeited” if the “publication ... appears to the State Government to contain any matter the publication of which is punishable under Section 124A or Section 153A or Section 153B or Section 292 or Section 293 or Section 295A of the Indian Penal Code”.

Reality79, if you want to make a correction on your post, you can do so by clicking on the little pencil thingie in the top right corner of your post, as long as you catch it within 30 minutes.

betterdaze.... Hooray for India and it's religious hate law! Bad news for the Watchtower in India. They better make a different set of books and ragazines for countries that simply won't allow attacking the religion of others.

While this physical attack is appalling, the Watchtower can expect more of this around the world. It's just karma catching up with them. You reap what you sow.

I agree, ProdigalSon, the physical attacks are appalling. Yet we "see" these news events through the lens and laws of our more religiously diverse, yet supposedly secular, 21st century Western world. It's easy forget that worship is often tied to ethnic/national identity. The Watchtower cult threatens to destroy those ties by undermining both family traditions and local governments.

    Good points Onthewayou.

where the women were forced to sign papers that they were not allowed to read

No detail is provided about how they were 'forced'. As there is no comment by the org about the wrongness of signing something without reading it maybe it's now considered a good 'out'. I can only think in horror at the possibilities of many different statements they could have signed that would have brought great dishonor to God (and you think the org would be concerned that they could also have brought dishonor to their congregations)

    I do not support violence............

But now the washTowel can make the cry of: 'Look! Persecution! Armageddon is just around the corner!' (Subject to overlapping)
