Why do I need a religion? I look at the world religions and I can see that they are the institutions where virtually no growth has taken place. Some religions still perform beheadings, female sexual mutilation and the cruel practice of shunning.
I called myself "spiritual" when I was a jw. Interestingly, I found some old journals and read what I considered "spiritual" and had to laugh. Does this count as "spiritual"?
- going in service?
- going to meetings?
- shun someone?
- study the Youth book with brainwash my kids?I figure I do not need any religion because I am "spiritual." And I no longer go in service, attend meetings, shun anyone, or brainwash my kids.
I figure if there is a god, she would be just fine with"spiritual" non-religious people.

For me... It was the fact that I never joined a "religion" which made me sign up as one of Jehovah's Witnesses.
I was always taught to avoid labels. That my faith was an active declaration of my following of Jesus Christ as the Son of the Living Almighty God, Jehovah.
Since he doesn't walk the Earth, some 2000 years on, I conclude that no one group of people can claim to follow him correctly.
However, if I could turn back time and live in the Middle East... I would sign up immediately, and would be a follower.
I was NEVER, a Jehovah's Witness in the canned and shelved state.
The WT has lost its direction, and even changed the dedication vows to suit its Authoritarian, Legalistic and sadlly "Labelled" Status.
I stand on the sidelines in the "Sin" bin as we Rugby lovers call it.

"I figure if there is a god, she would be just fine with"spiritual" non-religious people."
While I definitely believe there is noevidence of a god or gods, I still agree with that statement, and don't thinka god who will not understand that is worthy of any respect, let alone worship.

Why intertwine finding God with finding the "right" religion? If God is one and omnipresent, no-one can "own" the right. (Image borrowed from chinablog.cc)
Any organized religion, by definition, will be a poor imitation, with pieces missing. Like the fable of the blind men and the elephant.
I think if you put aside any requirement that a religion be the "most perfect" you might better enjoy yourself. As a bonus, few churches demand obedience and unity in thought like the Witnesses.
Rather than look for the most "godly" church, I'd look how people treat each other; how human it is. Is individuality respected? Are there soft borders, gently accepting and rarely rejecting?

The "church" of God is the "body" of those, all those, that believe and follow His Word.
It is not a building or exclusive group, it is not based on genetics or heritage or geography or creeds or anything liek that.
God lives in those that live in God and WE are His Church.

@ PSacremento: As an SDA follower once put it to me: "God's sheep graize on many hills..."
Food for thought... All the best
