    The WT has published articles in their defense. However, one thing they never mention is that with this religion, members are "not allowed" to read/investigate literature from other religions. There is constant cousel not to talk to apostates, not to view their websites, not to read their literature. And not just apostates but other religions. You never hear of JW's reading "Daily Word" from the Unity Church, or even "worldly philosophies" like books on positive thinking. You would think their stand would be, "Go ahead and read literature form other religions and you'll see their error, and you'll see that we have the truth." No, instead their view is, "Do not read it....you could be led astray..."

    That 'Cult' artilce tickled me.

    They note down things that cults do and they are the very things the WTBT$ does.

    Amazing!!!

    Open mind - "Here's my take on JWs and cults. Scale of 1 - 10.

    1 = Unitarian Universalists

    10 = People's Temple (Jim Jones)

    JWs are a 7.

    Scientologists are an 8."

    I like this (reminds me of the Kinsey scale for sexuality), but personally, I prefer the term "authoritarian high-control group". It's a bit wordy, but "cult" seems too "Bhagwan of Ragneesh"-ish to me.

    Just my opinion.

    DesirousOfChange - "JWs just exercising disfellowshipping to the max in an effort to keep in those who don't really want to be in. THAT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE to me."

    They don't want to keep in those that don't want in.

    They want to keep out those that they want out.

    Remember that, and it makes a bit more sense.

    I think it's both, Vidiot. The FEAR of disfellowshipping is a control mechanism. People who would, for example, like to ask that hottie at the office out on a date won't pull the trigger for fear of DF. Parents who would otherwise allow blood transfusions to save or extend the life of their child will refuse and convince themselves that no-blood is safer for fear of DF. A lot of what JWs do and don't do is because of the threat of DFing.

    MS, this is so true. Metrics drive behaviour.

    Why even bother addressing this Spade character? Spade is the definition of a troll.

    Agreed, but free speech doesn't require having common sense or critical thought,..
