New watchtower

They admitted in the Watchtower a few years ago that there has not been an increase in earthquakes. So why are they still going on about this?

Because it hasn't sunk in to the rank and file JWs yet. They still use it as part of the sign. Every time there is a major earthquake, chain emails make the circuit with fudged data about the "increase" in earthquakes. In addition to wanting the JWs to keep up with "new light" the Borg wants deniability; even though the JWs spout off about an increase in earthquakes, the WT says otherwise.

It is kind of like the overlapping generation thing. Expect a re-hash of the doctrine at this summer's district conventions. Why? Because too many rank and file JWs still think the generation means anyone alive in 1914.

It has to frustrate the GB to hear that so many JWs stick with the message they learned before getting baptized regardless of what new information comes out.

Not everything put forward by the WTBTS rings false. Indeed, my own personal values and principles align to a large measure. However, there are some things that are odious to my sensibilities, and this thing about earthquakes is one of them. My spine stiffens when I detect that particular hint of excitement in the voice of a Jehovah's Witness remarking on the latest seismic disaster, taken as it is as a sign that Watchtower prophesy is unfolding. It is in much the same vein as those who took some perverse sense of delight in the September 11 atrocities as a sign from God that He was about to unleash the four horsemen and the Rapture was around the corner. Ditto the kooks who regard the drama unfolding in the Middle East as some kind sign of things to come and who would be obscenely delighted to see a mushroom cloud or two as some confirmation of Revelation. It is saddening and offensive when something for which there is no redeeming quality is allowed an optimistic spin. Seismic activity, while still significant and inevitable, is a sign of nothing more than the fact that we live on a slowly cooling planet with a molten core and sometimes people tragically die as a consequence.

"We are not experiencing more earthquakes; because of modern technology, we are just more aware of them than people were in the past."

Note how they don't actually address that objection (slippery buggers). Never mind though, the 'Truth' book is most illuminating

I might be slightly more impressed if Jesus had said: "In the last days. . . more people will die from earthquakes due too increased population and taller buildings."

Consider this fact: The Bible does not emphasize the number of earthquakes during the last days.

Consider this fact: The Bible does not emphasize the number of casualties caused by earthquakes during the last days either.

It doesn't matter what the WTS claim, it only take one bad call

to be considered a False Prophet. Anybody wanna start countin'

the bad calls made by the WTS ???

I think it would be like trying to count how many times February 2 repeated itself during the movie "Groundhog Day". After awhile, with so many changes to earlier bad calls and then changing the changes back, forward or sideways only to hedge what they said they said with weasle words to the effect that they never really said what they said and it was only the rank and file who said what they said they said, you might just throw up your hands in surrender.

Actually, Jesus said that earthquakes, and the rest, were to be expected and definitely NOT a sign of the end.

    'you will here reports of...'

    'do not be misled'

'... the end is not yet'

Read the full account in Matthew CAREFULLY without the Watchtower spin and it's obvious they have twisted it to mean the opposite of what was intended.

Like Jesus knew, and people here have said over and over again - events commonly occuring throughout history cannot be a sign of anything!
