Not too long ago someone asked me about what hobbies I have. My list is long. Some have continued through the years while others have been replaced with new interests.
before I left the JWs
- knitting (continuing)
- crocheting (continuing)
- macrame
- photography (continuing)
- sewing - everything from kids clothes to coats and even a few wedding gowns (continuing)
- reading (continuing)
after I left the JWs
- silk flower arranging
- used to collect books (had 1600 at one point)
- now I collect DVDs (have almost 800 so far)
- refinishing furniture
- upholstery
- building computers to give to needy kids
- cycling (which I am finally picking up again after 10 years off my bike)
- jewelry making (newest)
Every year I tackle something new although some things aren't hobbies. I've tried many things not on the above lists and discovered I didn't like it or had no talent for it. But I just move on to the next thing. The only 2 things I had to have someone show me was crocheting and computers. Mouthy's daughter taught me how to crochet. It was something I just could not understand without seeing it done. And I had to have show me how to install a modem in an old 386 PC. From there I just picked it up myself.
I really believe that if I stop learning new things; stop stimulating my brain with new ideas that I will just turn into some little old lady without a rocker. I figure I have another 30 years of learning to do.

The plastic model kits have improved a lot (with an unfortunate increase in price) since I was a kid. I'm mostly done with a USS Hornet with Doolittle's B-25's on the deck. And have just a little touch up to finish a USS Washington. Both are 1/700. When I get money again I'm going t get a HIJMS Kirashima to go with my Washington.
I've finished one novel (historical fiction involving the navy) and I'm almost done with a thriller based on JW life. Looking for agents for both.

*** w09 12/15 pp. 8-9 Busy and Joyful in God’s Service ***Most of God’s servants can buy out some time for vital activities from time spent on less important things. Ask yourself, ‘How much time do I spend reading secular magazines or newspapers, watching TV, listening to music, or pursuing a hobby?’ Such activities can be pleasurable but only when kept in balance. (1 Tim. 4:8) If you realize that poor time-management is a problem for you, take steps to get a grip on your schedule.
Adam, a husband, father of three, and an elder, explains what helps him: “I strive to lead a simple life. I avoid time-consuming hobbies and belongings that demand much attention. It’s not that I live a life of self-denial—I just enjoy uncomplicated recreation.”
*** w54 8/15 p. 508 pars. 20-21 Endurance Through Hope ***Many other nontheocratic interests abound in the world, such as the so-called “hobbies.” These may furnish pleasure and recreation, even profit in worldly goods. But hobbies, like commercial pursuits, may very easily entangle one and undermine one’s hope.
21 Hobbies are so varied today that they range from the sedate stamp-collecting to the vigorous athletic exercising. By way of illustration we shall take the common hobby called “photography.” A brother finds that this hobby furnishes him much pleasure. His camera records many delightful theocratic assemblies and personal experiences. His “own interests” tell him he needs to keep up with all aspects of this hobby. He buys numerous magazines and reads them. Soon he starts to read books on this hobby, spending more and more time on a “lawful” pursuit. Meetings may be missed to keep up with the latest “camera” magazine. He may even feel it necessary to associate with those outside the truth to learn more about his hobby. This brother’s “lawful” interest has grown to a point where it threatens to undermine his hope. If his “own interest” is not checked and put in its theocratic place, shipwreck is ahead.

You do upholstery Lee? An interesting little tidbit of info about my family is that my Dad learned upholstery while in Federal prison in Seagoville, Texas. He declared his CO and spent almost 2 years there, and kept doing upholstery when he got out. He's actually quite good at it, and even did some restoration work on a horse drawn buggy for a local museum.

I had someone ask me what my hobbies were once, and I could only think of one ! I run a lot. I was so embarrassed that I had no other hobbies off the top of my head, that when I went home and purposefully thought about what I enjoyed doing and had to make a mental note to persue those interests !
-running
-reading
-cooking
Obviously, I am still looking to expand my list! This thread has given me some new ideas....
