Japan prime minister: High risk of radiation leak

    By Michael Kitchen

LOS ANGELES (MarketWatch) -- Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan said in a national address Tuesday that there was a high risk of a further radioactive leak from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, where a blast occurred earlier at one reactor and another had caught fire. Kan said that everyone within 20 kilometers of the plant should remain calm and evacuate, while those within 30 kilometers should stay indoors. He said efforts to control the situation were ongoing.

It is an on-going situation; but my guess is it will only get worse. Those explosions have probably damaged the infastructure needed to control the reactors; now the radio-active levels make it hazardous for anyone to go near those plants. That's my guess...

Eating some kinds of seaweed work to neutralize radiation. Don't remember what kind it was.

I wouldn't give it second thought unless your headed to the regions of where those reactors are located.

It is said that even if there was a tragic nuclear melt down of these reactors the prevailing damage would be dramatically less than

the Chernobyl accident due to the design difference of the plants themselves.

Well, we're thinking of changing plans and go to Kyushu instead of Tokyo...that's over 800 miles away from the Fukushima, about the same distance between where I live in the Bay Area and Vancouver, British Columbia. Not just because of the radiation issue but because Kyushu is relatively unaffected by the catastrophe. Only thing is that there is now a volcano erupting there.

I sympathize with your dilemma. As I previously mentioned, when I linked to the NY Times article, there seems to be a contrast between the official position and the technical details about the reactor's escalating damage. To be on the safe side, assume that it will get worse.
