Making a fetish out of bible inerrancy

The Catholic Church dominated christianity for a thousand and a half years without any successful christian competitor.

Challenges came and went, but, the central authority won out.

Catholic power stemmed from a simple idea: PETER was bestowed by Jesus and installed as the first leader or Pope.

Peter, then, passed his authority down successively; one Pope followed another.

The CENTRAL AUTHORITY of Catholicism was Magisterium.

If you don't know what Magisterium means you might want to look hard at the definition:

the divinely appointed authority in the Catholic Church consisting of the Pope and Bishops whose purpose is to teach and establish the true faith without error. The magisterium alone, according to Catholicism, has the right to interpret the word of God.
    www.carm.org/catholic-terminology

Look at the above. Do you see the word: bible there anywhere? Nope.

The Pope and Bishops as a (Governing Body) authority "appointed" by God is what the Catholic authority rested on.

What was "bound on earth is bound in heaven." The tail wags the dog, so to speak.

If the Pope and Bishops declare something to be true: by golly IT IS!

Not scripture. Not proof texts. Not bible reading. Not door to door ministry.

The "Governing Body" is the be-all and end-all of inerrancy.

In the middle of the 16th century Martin Luther challenged the MAGISTERIUM to a duel, so to speak.

Luther needed a weapon equal to the power, range and magnitude of Magisterium. Luther's weapon of choice was a NEW DEFINITION of bible.

Luther announced the brand spanking new doctrine: SOLA SCRIPTURA.

    What is Sola Scriptura?

Sola scriptura (Latin "by scripture alone") is the doctrine that the Bible is the only infallible and inerrant authority for Christian faith, and that it contains all knowledge necessary for salvation and holiness. ...
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sola_scriptura

The Authority is snatched away from a central Governing Body and turned over to the INDIVIDUAL and their own personal one on one interpretation...

how? The BIBLE is made the central fetish!

For Protestants to compete with the vast Authority of institutionalized Catholicism---they had two steps to make:

1.Remove power from the Pope and Bishops

    2. Substitute the same power, authority and inerrancy with BIBLE.

This boot strapping strategy was pure ASSERTION.

Protestantism faced off with the Catholic Church and claimed for itself a SUPERIOR authority: the bible's inerrant guidance.

    Fast forward another millennium.

Christianity is now filled with competing authority everywhere at odds with ITSELF!

The Catholic Church is still on one side with its ancient theory of Magisterium...............and Protestantism is on the other with its BIBLE.

    But, SOLA SCRIPTURA is self-refuting!

    1. The doctrine is falsifiable. If scripture is inerrant there can be no error. If error is found the doctrine falls.

2.Christianity is divided. Opinion and interpretation take equally devout and pious Christians off in a thousand DIFFERENT and CONTRADICTING directions. A True christianity would harmonize with itself.

Protestants, by making a fetish out of bible inerrancy have disproved their own foundation.

This opened the door for cults to fill the void.

Jehovah's Witnesses stepped in with a THIRD WAY!

A new theory of Authority was born.

THE BIBLE IS INERRANT but, only in the hands of the GOVERNING BODY (central authority).

The doctrine of the Faithful and Discreet Slave is a bastardized, Ad Hoc con game combining the worst of two failed theories of authority.

Governing Body equals Magisterium+bible inerrancy---but, only in their hands.

Luther, by making the bible inerrant set up Protestantism to self-falsify and pave the way for cults.

By OVER stating the authority of scripture christianity has shattered like a brick through a plate glass window.

Interesting thoughts - thanks for sharing. I'll have to mentally digest this one for a day or two. Great points, though.

Wouldn't that be the bible that was canonized by the Catholic church? The Protestants didn't start off with a whole new book or testament (think Mormon), so they really started off with a false premise. Even if they had original manuscripts for the bible itself (which we know they didn't), the chosen books were selected by the same people they were arguing against.

I already mentioned in another thread that I loved your thoughts on this, Terry.

Now on another point, I'm not going to lie... but the first thing that popped into my head was the two beasts in revelation... the first given all authority over all the nations, tribes, etc, and then the second one springing from the first, that looks like a lamb but speaks like a dragon, exercising all the same authority as the first beast.

I have no authority to say anything about anything, but this was just the first thought that popped into my head.

The Catholic canon was DIFFERENT from the Protestant canon.

Books were removed and others targeted by Luther, Calvin and others who appointed themselves the arbiters of what passed muster!

Catholics usually break the 46 books of the Jewish Scriptures ( Old Testament ) into four sections.

The Pentateuch (or Torah ): Genesis, Exodus , Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy .

The Historical Books: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah , Tobit , Judith, Esther, 1 Maccabees , and 2 Maccabees .

The Wisdom Books: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs , Wisdom, and Sirach.

The Prophetic Books: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations , Baruch, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah , Jonah, Micah, Nahum , Habakkuk , Zephaniah , Haggai , Zechariah , and Malachi

    MARTIN LUTHER

made an attempt to remove the books of Hebrews, James, Jude and Revelation from the canon partially because they were perceived to go against certain Protestant doctrines such as sola scriptura

But, Tam...that exactly how Protestants and Catholics have interpreted scripture for thousands of years!!

It pops into their head, it looks like it could be true and so IT BECOMES so!

You'd make an equally adept cleric.

If you were Fred Franz you could put your interpretation in a book and the Watchtower would require millions of JW's to learn it at a book study and then preach it door to door.

    Think about THAT!

Catholic Bibles also have the "Deuterocanonical" books: Tobit, Judith, some additions to Esther, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch, some additions to Daniel, and the two Maccabbees.

By they way, Popes only claim to be inerrant when they speak "ex cathedra":

Papal infallibility is the dogma in Roman Catholic theology that, by action of the Holy Spirit, the Pope is preserved from even the possibility of error [1] when he solemnly declares or promulgates to the universal Church a dogmatic teaching on faith as being contained in divine revelation, or at least being intimately connected to divine revelation. It is also taught that the Holy Spirit works in the body of the Church, as sensus fidelium, to ensure that dogmatic teachings proclaimed to be infallible will be received by all Catholics. This dogma, however, does not state either that the Pope cannot sin in his own personal life or that he is necessarily free of error, even when speaking in his official capacity, outside the specific contexts in which the dogma applies.

I understand that the Popes have claimed infallibility only about three things: their being infallible (that is, I am infallible because I say I am infallible), the Immaculate Conception (Mary being conceived without the original sin) and the Assumption (Mary going in human body to the heavens).

This is the impression I have always had. To a Catholic, Jehovah's witnesses feel like Catholics of five hundred years ago. I guess this is why some Catholics join the Watchtower: they feel they are going back to the roots, to "true" Christianity, and they find a familiar sense of authority.
