We don't get termites this far north. Read and weep. On the downside, it's snowing right now.

Termites fly toward the outdoor/light. Little black ants, with wings. Call a termite professional. Don't try to treat yourself. You'll just move them, instead of irradicate them.

I've seen 'em red and white, too, dear Skeet (peace to you!)... and without wings. Usually with, though (by the time they make their presence known).
Peace!

Here in the south termites are bad. You have the subterrainian termites and the Dry wood termites. The Subterrainian come up from the ground with tubes going up block or brick walls into the wood of the floor or walls. These guys are white in color. Also need to go back into the ground for miosture. In the spring they have scouts that swarm out with big wings. Subterrainian termites can eat a house up real fast. The good news is just about any posion will kill them. The dry wood termites are slow eaters. I don't know what they look like. The can be lured in by light. All I know is you can have them for years with little damage but if you do find out you have them the only way to get rid of them is to have your house tented. Were they use a gas to kill them. Thats about all I know about termites. My suggestion is get professional help. Totally ADD

Signs: unexpected thin, weak spots beneath the surface of the wood. Mud-like tubes running from ground level to the floor joists in a crawl space, or low-lying wood siding. Sand-like wood dust near anything made of wood.
Appearance: you seldom see them, they don't like sunlight. Adults leaving the nest to start a new one resemble flying ants, as Snowbird said.
