Forcing https will help ensure people can't eavesdrop on the web communication traffic between your computer and the Facebook servers. It also provides reassurance that you are communicating with the actual Facebook site and not some rogue server that just LOOKS like Facebook.
The bad thing about https is it will be slower. And it doesn't protect you from anything else, like bad links people may post on Facebook or bad apps that like to spam your friends.
