I like Sooner's choice, I bought the similar version 40 years ago and still make good use of it. It's a nice assortment of quality, basic tools for much less than the individual prices. Don't bother with low-end tools, you'll soon have to replace them when they break or wear out.
If cost is an object, then look for a packaged set of screwdrivers, pliers, etc. That usually is a better deal than buying one piece at a time, though probably not as good as the comlete set.
If you don't mind waiting, Father's Day will be coming up in less than two months. Tools are often on sale for the occassion.
I'm a girl... and a tool groupie (my dad could build/fix anything, so my first toys were tools), dear llama (peace to you!). I don't own any big tools, but I do have my own jig and circular saws, and a cordless drill. Sears tools are some of the best, if you buy mid- to high-end. If you have $ to add to your card, then, some of the suggestions above (especially dear Sooner's - peace to you!) are great. If not, consider these:
Decent screwdriver, socket, or allen wrench set
A good tape measure (at least 50')
A decent level (small)
A cheapie stud finder
A cheapie outlet tester
A fairly good vise grip
ALL of these are tools you might use frequently, particularly if you hang pictures, need to unloosen/tighten something, or can't tell whether an outlet/light switch is working.
Enjoy and, again, peace to you!

Who needs a stud finder, I am here babe!

Well, there IS the saying, "Seek... and ye shall find," dear JRK (peace to you!). Had to have my "finder" first, though - LOLOLOLOLOL!
Peace!
