JWs who do a "disappearing act" because of damaging gossip and trouble in the hall

I know of a few JW friends who from time to time have to do a disappearing act from their hall.

One JW finds a "reason" to leave town to visit relatives and another JW would go to "visit" another hall in a nearby vicinity. In all honesty, they are fleeing from the strife in the kingdom hall when they are in the spotlight. From what I am told, the gossip is at monumental proportions and people are regularly shredded by troublemaking, gossiping sisters in the hall. Whether or not the elders know is one thing, but I don't think they care to do anything about it. I don't think the elders care one iota what the women in the religion have to put up with.

I am a ten-year "fader" and I have mentioned to one of these well-meaning JW friends (who imagines she will reactivate me) that I would never tolerate what she puts up with and it seems to be getting worse! Now that I am out, the whole thing seems so insane to me. How on earth could they possibly call this a brotherhood???

I was subjected to that type of mess by some elders' wives.

    It nearly crushed me.

Nothing would make me return to that den of vipers again.

    Sylvia,

I know we share a similar background on this. The last time I talked to my Grama, she asked if I was going to meetings yet and I bascially told her what you said:

    It nearly crushed me.
Nothing would make me return to that den of vipers again.

She knows everything that happened to me and all she could say was, "I just can't understand why Jehovah let that go on for so long."

In the seventeen years since I broke with them, I have never seen any worse examples of people being shredded by gossip than what I saw amongst the JWs .

Also, as already noted, elder's wives are often as not at the forefront of destroying others with gossip:

    - its victims are not always just other sisters, either.

Or they say wait on jehovah to clear up the rumors. Funny thing is we're still waiting.

LONGHAIRGAL- Good thread. The gossip mill is always running amok in JW land. I posted a thread a few months ago that when I was doing a job in my old area I lived as a JW over 8 years ago - I ran into a JW man I knew in my old congregation. He told me he had heard I had been DFed. I said, " No. I'm just inactive. They TRIED to DF me but I won my appeal of it. " So it shows how rumors get spread regarding our condition- even if we no longer attend. Not even around to defend ourselves ! JW's are a bunch of sniping gossipers many times

John Jones was an elder who ran away - he had been screwing around with someone for two years and was only caught when the woman he was sleeping with had a breakdown and confessed. During all this time he was the P.O. and had even sat in on judicial hearings to judge others doing the same thing! - anyway, he ran away to another congregation to avoid being disfellowshipped (his furious father in law would have seen to that) and he got a public reproof there instead. It is amazing how repentant a two-years adulterer can be once they have been caught ;)

A year or 2 later he was a MS again, and in a year or 2 after that an elder once more. Abergavenny, you were welcome to him. Obviously, running away worked very well for him.

I agree with everybody who says gossip destroys people's lives, and that gossip amongst the JWs is the most vicious. Whenever they made announcements like somebody was being DFd or Censored or even if their name was just named for whatever reason, after the meeting EVERYONE was abuzzed with the gossip, even the younguns.

I also noticed the dissapearing act, though I didn't understand it. I just assumed the brothers or sisters just changed congregations. Changing congos was so common, nobody batted an eye about it. Though the gossip was always rampant.
