In my family, DAing is worse as it's YOU making that decision and making the first move.
DFing is bad in my family but they seem to view it as a mistake and that you will fix yourself later.
Weird. Both lead to shunning by others, anyway.
What is better? Disassociation or Disfellowshipping?

My last contact with jws was when an "elder" pulled his car over and walked up to me. He put out his hand to shake mine. I knew what he was up to and ignored it. He started talking, so I took out my earphones. Do you believe blah blah, faithful and discreet blah...No.
Do you believe jehovah blah blah...No.
Well write a letter to the cong blah...No.
Earphones back in. That was oh about 12 yrs ago. Very satisfying!

The announcement to the congregation is the same either way.
If you care about how you leave, disassociation means you left them, disfellowshipping means they removed you.
If you don't care, then it doesn't matter. I have no idea if I've been disfellowshipped yet or not.

I have faded, well just left really, over three years ago, I am not DF'd or DA'd.
The reason I did not want to be "disciplined" by them was my extended family still in, including my 91 yr old Mum.
I am now at the point where the JW cong. means nothing to me, has no authority over me, so why should I even write a DA letter, they are just a silly little cult that I left, I owe them nothing, they owe me a lot.
They may try to DF me in the future, I vote, donate blood,attend Church services etc. all openly. I will make it as awkward as possible if they try to do so because they do not have the right.
They do not have the right morally, legally or, despite the JW apologist's (20571) long screed above, they do not have the right scripturally.
They can go and poke their silly, self important, judicial procedure where the sun don't shine.

DF'ing and DA'ing results in the same thing the only differences are who makes the final decision and the timing. If you are already mentally out of the club it is irrelevant.

DF'd = weak spiritually, they reject you = adultery/fornication/smoking = empathy,
DA'd = you reject them, APOSTATE, an opposer of the WTS, don't try to help at all or hope for change
Of course, this does not cover every case, just my observation over 45 years. I'm inactive now but if things closed in on me I will DA myself, reject them not allow them to reject me. Plan on an ad in the local rag.
